A few weeks ago I was out wheeling with a few friends and I came to realize that I need to do something about disabling traction control, Anti lock break system, and Vehicle stability control.

These items where added to the late 3rd generation 4runners, I believe 2000, 2001, and 2002.
Having these kick in while offroading was annoying as hell!

I figured I needed to do something about it, and do it now!

After doing a little research, I found out exactly what I needed to do and decided to do my own write up on it:

For this modification I used about 8 feet of 16 gauge wire and toyota fog light switch part number:

    The switch looks like this:

    Prongs in the back:

I cut the 8 foot wire into two four foot sections and fed it thru the firewall grommet located in a spot below the master cylinder:

I used a thicker gauge black wire to help me fish the red wiring thru:

I then located the master cylinder and unplugged the wiring shown below:

Within the wiring on that specific harness, is a 18 gauge red wire, I cut this wire and "extended" both ends using the wiring I fished thru the grommet.

    Shrink wrapped for waterproofing:

Then taped for even more waterproofing:

On the other end, inside the cabin, I connected some spade connectors:

Fished the end thru a blank on my dash:

    Plugged the spade connectors:

Placed my switch in the stock location:

    Now to test the mod!

I turned the truck on, and flipped the switch:

Indicator lights tell me that TRAC, VSC, and ABS have been disabled!

To enable TRAC, VSC, and ABS, you will need to flip the switch to the "off" position and restart the truck.

The TRAC, VSC, and ABS will NOT reset while the truck is on. You must restart the vehicle.

I am perfectly fine with that.

    Ramon,
Thanks for posting. Had the same issue last year when it snowed in SC (unusual). As you said very annoying and took forever to get up our driveway. Do you think this will work on a 2005 4R?
    Best, Tom

that would be a 4th gen 4runner. I do not know if it would work.

Check and see if you have the same brake cylinder setup?

Nice Mod & write up !! Its interesting..i just bought this 2002 4r & as you showed in the dash pic for testing the mod, my dash always lights up VSC off & VSC trac constantly(means no trac control or stab control). But it does not light up ABS. I wonder if the PO did similar stuff..or perhaps something else is going on. Yet to explore.

I tried this mod today, and the only problem is, that the switch has to be on the on position for the lights to go away. What did I do wrong?

So does that mean that you have to switch it in the off position to make the lights come back on? (ABS, VSC, TRAC OFF)

I used 18 gauge wire instead of the 16, but I wouldn't think that would be a problem

maybe youre wiring is backwards on the back of the switch...

Switch the wires on the back terminals and see if that fixes

Just to clarify, my switch has to be on the on position for the lights to go away. Then the switch has to on the off position for the lights to come on. I don't understand how the switch is on the off position, then on for it to work

Another way of disabling ABS on a 3rd gen is: If you already have an Ultragauge 1.2, simply remove the ISO-9141 isolation cable from between the Ultragauge & the OBD2 plug.

Hi, excellent write up! I am going to attempt this mod on my 2007 2wd, but I am assembling a custom auxiliary switchboard because I like the feel of it better. Does anybody know if there are specific requirements for the switch? Might need to match a certain voltage. I have a house light switch sitting in my tool box, but I'm not so sure it would actually work.

Has anybody constructed an auxiliary switchboard recently?
