Super bummer the 4Runner doesn’t have an idiot beep when you back up and get close to something. I’m the idiot who backed into the wall yesterday in a parking garage.

    fuck.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
Yours doesn't have Rear Cross Traffic Alert? Mine does, and it's on! Last night I was backing out slowly while in the Kroger parking lot and it went off. It detected a truck approaching and I was able to avert a crisis.

And how fast do you have to hit a wall to bust the back glass?

yup. The rear hatch back/door is fucked. Entire thing needs to be replaced. Bummer as my sticker collection on the inside of the lift gate was fire.

    That's what she said, haha.

Looks like the door took some damage too. Know how much it's going to cost to fix? I've been in the hatch before and it's tight - should <= wouldn't* want to have to replace the glass

    Edited for autocorrect

    Bummer. :(

I pay close attention to the backup camera, but I do wish I had a beep.

That does suck. I backed into a partially closed garage door once. Just scratched up the spoiler (not to mention what it did to the garage door) but it still hurts to think about it...

My condolences, that sucks. Can you tell what contacted first? Was the wall not quite flat to the rear of the vehicle? Honestly surprised the whole hatch needs to be replaced.

Hit a low hanging concrete beam in a really small, tight underground garage. It’s considerable lower than the rest of the garage and not a flat wall. Best part….. The spot I hit had a sign saying “do not back in”.

    Again, I am an idiot.

    Damn, that sucks!

Is it on the trim panel? You could swap that onto the new tailgate.

Well that's the problem, it should be written backwards like ambulance on an emergency vehicle hood so you can read it in the mirror. I would sue them

You could also argue that English is not your first language and sue them over that. Just kidding, America's litigious society is great though, right?

Agree with @gomiami, you're taking it like a champ, the same way I would. It's hard to admit a mistake.

Going back to the OP about distance sensor beeping, that shit works at low level and probably wouldn't have stopped this mistake.

    Sometimes, shit happens

I had factory backup sensor on my 2010 SR5 and I can confirm that it doesn't look up. Beeps like crazy when you about to hit tall grass, but keeps quiet for tree branches above rear license plate.

    OP,

Sorry to hear this, but... your response to this indicates that you're in much better control of yourself than 95% of the drivers out there. Good for you.

For what it's worth, I know of people that have backed into things in vehicles equipped WITH the proximity alert. They are not infallible.

Again, it's refreshing to hear of someone who:
    a) accepts responsibility for a human mistake, and
    b) has a decent sense of humor about it.

I disagree with you one one thing: you are NOT an idiot. You made a simple mistake and learned from it. Carry on.

Depends how hard it is. Wood? You might be able to get by with a love tap. Concrete or steel not so much. When hard meets hard the weaker hard usually breaks.

The parking sensors are mounted in the bumper cover. (My 2010 SR5 lacks a camera but has the button sensors.) I don't think the sensors would detect something so high.

Live and learn. Always need to be mindful of overhead clearance in parking garages, since the 4R is tall.

The hatch is usually first body panel to rust on 4Runners, so it's difficult to find a good one in salvage yards. I hope the collision shop doesn't have to wait too long to get a new replacement hatch.
