So I lost the first bolt retainer doing my first oil change and lost the other one this week doing my second oil change. It’s a real hassle installing the skid plate w/o them because they hold the aluminium spacers in place. I read somewhere that I could get a box of retainers fairly cheap and received them yesterday. They just look smaller than I recalled, so rather than go drop the skid plate I decided to just order the OEM hardware off of EBay IMG_1585.jpg IMG_0567.jpg and compare. (I figure having the original hardware as a future backup wouldn’t be such a bad idea).

Here are some pics of the bolt retainers I received along with the OEM hardware I ordered. I’ll let you folks know definitively if the cheap retainers are a “go” because if so they are great to have on hand.

I have never had that issue with the TRD skid plate bolts. I do remove and install the hardware by hand if that makes a difference. I try not to use power tools for oil change related items.

Just to follow-up. The bolt retainers were an exact match except for color. So having 50 on hand as spares is a good deal in my opinion for $12

I just did an oil change a few days ago and fiddled with ways the retainers could come off. If you were to loosen and completely remove the front bolts, the retainer clip would back off of the bolt. If you take off the rear bolts first, then the front bolts come out with the retainer attached. Hope this makes sense.

You absolutely make sense!!! I was kinda misleading in my OP, I don’t physically do my own oil change. I buy the oil at WalMart, filters at the dealership, and have a very trusted Lube Service do the work. (Saves me lots of time). When I have my guy replace the retainers this next oil change I will tell him exactly this…. Thanks!
