Need shocks for ~3" Rear lift

Hi -

I tried doing some research first and couldn't find the answer, so I'm starting a new thread.

I'm looking for rear shocks for a spring setup of around 3". It's probably a little more right now, but I intend to add a rear bumper soon to bring that down to about 3" total.

I'm sort of doing this a** backward. I found some springs locally that I installed 3 weeks ago right before I took off for the Baja 1000. I originally had on a spacer lift with 5100s and when I was removing one of the shocks, apparently the nut was installed correctly (by me FWIW) and it stripped the top of the shock. So I tried to upgrade my shocks last minute and bought Fox smooth bodies that would have been perfect for the lift height.(https://www.4wheelparts.com/p/fox-p...eservoir-shock-985-24-057/_/R-BKTK-985-24-057)

However, the bottom eyelet hole was the wrong size to fit, so I just went and grabbed another 5100 last minute to get the truck serviceable for my trip down south. Now I'm trying to find the appropriate sized shock that will fit. Through 4WP parts website, it claims the shock I bought will fit, but it doesn't.

I looked at Eibach and they don't have shocks for a 3" lift, Bilstein doesn't either...?

I hear Icon's need to be rebuilt every 1-3 years.

Any other options on which shock would fit a 3" rear lift?

For 3" of lift. Check out dobinson. They sell extended travel shocks. Which is what you'll want. Fox has them to.

 

Have you checked the part numbers of those fox shocks on other websites?

 

If you’re near San Diego, try Accutune to see if they can replace the lower eyelets on the Fox shocks.

They may have Tundra shocks in stock (that’s the route I took), same thing with the mounts, they need to be swapped with 4rn mounts.

I tried. Their website is tough to navigate. I think I’ll try calling them today and see what they say and then maybe call accutune after depending on what shock Fox sells off the shelf.

 

Yes I did, it was part of my TC Long Travel kit. There are parts and labor involved, but I'm on Tundra rear shocks (Fox).

 

Did the Tundra shock need to be re-valved?

Or Did they install a new lower bushing since the 4runner has a larger stud?

Yes, the lower mounts have to be converted for the 4rn. The end result fits as expected.

Edit: Also note that the description above mentions a 0-1.5" lift. That number is relative to a Tundra, it's long enough for a taller lift on a 4rn.

 

What is the overall travel of your shocks?

 

I don't know what it would top out at. Accutune might be able to answer that. I did add limit straps so the springs (ICON overland springs) don't fall out. So you know, it's that long.

That link, is the reason I asked because that shock has a little less then 9.5" of travel.

I'm not knocking your setup. I'm just curious since I've been thinking about upgrading my rear setup

 

Good question, I don’t know if it was an option at the time I placed the order (in 2020). If Accutune hasn’t switched to it, I’d ask for sure and see what they say.

They have been an upright vendor so far as I know, so they should have a good reason for the recommendation. Let us know what they say!

 

Those are pricey. The smooth bodies I bought actually have more travel but not adjustable. Not sure how valuable that is on these vehicles. Perhaps if you load them down for a camping trip you can make adjustments?

Your right, accutune is top notch.

 

Ones 2.0" ones 2.5". The wider the shock the more stability. I'm more interested in larger shock bodies. I'm currently running the trd pro fox shocks that are 2.5" bodies and 9" of travel.

This isn’t a race vehicle. This is what I raced in(navigator). 4Runner is a chase vehicle and Johnson valley/Anza Borego “light” off-road vehicle.

My family flew down to la Paz a week later and needed them to get my youngins back up the peninsula.

 

Just called Fox and accutune. Fox didn’t have any sales reps available. Called accutune picked up right away.

985-24-118 are the shocks I need. I’m going to return the ones I bought to 4WP and then put in an order for the 118s next week with the “tune”. Slightly less travel but that’s never held me back before.

Yea. Next step is to burn off the rest of the rubber on my current tires and then upgrade the front suspension. I think I want to go with 35s and a regear when it comes time. Getting close to finishing off the upgrades to this vehicle. Then it’s time to convince the wife we need a 4 seat prerunner to really let loose.

I did ~500 miles prerunning in this Penhall and it’s the s***!!

we did not get it stuck! It was the owner a couple days after we returned it. Part of the course got destroyed by 3 weeks of prerunning and 40” tires. Some people can’t have nice things.

My entire build is based on the 35" goal. The only place I've skimped (so far) is the steering rack and breaks. Once the rack starts to get messy I'll see about my options and the breaks so far are holding up, but I do keep an eye on them.

BTW, you're runner is looking good! Here's mine with the assorted obvious upgrades

 

What rebumper is that? That’s the other big upgrade I intend to do. They are expensive though and I’d rather throw the cash at a regear but I really hate dealing with an extra spare on my roof.

edit: never enough braking power. Probably should do that too once mine gets all loaded up. It’s already got full steel skids. Mine only has 45,000 miles after 6 years. About 22 miles daily half the year and a Baja trip or 2 each year is the main mileage. When it’s in the dirt, mine does get used hard though.

 

I ended up going all in with C4. I was able to get a discount which covered the shipping costs. Specifically, its the C4 Overland Series.

The things I like about it are:

• Makes room for the rear wheel
• Super sturdy swing outs - never a rattle while cruising through the desert
• Fits the Toyo 35" with room to spare (MT 37 Baja? - maybe later)
• Camera relocation is close enough
• Dual swing outs are easier in your daily driver settings

Cons, not cheap, needs paint or powder coating. Once it's up and running, you quickly forget about the cons.

I am in the same boat with rear shocks. My current setup is Bilstien 5100's, but they are pretty close to topping out at ride height. My current ride height shock measurement is 22.5" and the longest 5100's for the 4R top out at 23.5".
Would you mind sharing the specs on the shocks you got from Accutune? Extended and compressed length?

I am still searching for the shock which will give me ~9" of stroke with the right amount of up travel/down travel. As it sits now I am at 22.5" ride height. The shocks you posted would only allow for 2.3" of down travel before extending to full length and hanging up the rear axle. It is surprising that there isn't an obvious shock option for this.
I may post my own thread asking questions specific to my situation, instead of hijacking your thread.
