What is it? I hope I am not over it. 60 lb KO2, maybe 40 lb wheel, and 60 lb rack, and soon 60 lbs of fuel.

I think the after market racks and how they mount to distribute weight change this but there is from manual

Owners manual 2021 4Runner - Page 190 - "Do not exceed 120 lb. (54 kg) cargo weight on the roof luggage carrier."

The product should have documented static/dynamic weight limits.

Check with your manufacturer for specific weights.

Zero clue what to do with them. They are heavy with no gas in them. And my roof frack is cheap and crappy :p

The lack of crossbar support vs. weight is your biggest concern. Essentially, that's a wire rack that's only supported in 2 places with the cross bars you have.

Sounds like an excuse to buy a better roof rack.

Or, reinforce the one you have.

My basket is attached to the side rails with angle channel. 3/8" carriage bolts slide right into the side rails, If you remove the end caps. I bolted those through the angle channel and used rubber washers to isolate the channel from the side rail so they wouldn't scratch each other up. Then, I used small u-bolts to attach the basket to the angle channel. Not that it necessarily adds any capacity, but the basket sits tighter to the side rails, and it feels much more solid this way.

Hate to say it but your storage rack doesn’t appear to be engineered for this application.

If it is junk, sell it and get something more purposeful. I like Sherpa Crestone and you might see a Black Friday sale if you look. Front-runner, Prinsu, et. al. Their’s a lot of good options. You can expect capacities of 300 / 700 (static/dynamic) with a good rack.

You’ll probably need to revisit your gas can solution as well.

For serious overlanding I can see the benefits of an equipment rack on top. My main concern would be being too top heavy resulting in increased roll over risks.

I would put that spare tire back under the vehicle and call it good.

Do 34’s fit underneath in the spare tire area? I think we all know where this is going, lets not beat around the bush. Our friend Mr. @Yotaholic has painted himself into the rear bumper corner lol.

    Just kidding ;) There’s always creative solutions….

(Usually temporary ones….until you can no longer resist and just say screw it and get a bumper with double swingouts. Then that will be followed by re-doing your rear suspension to match the weight, then doing it again when you overshoot and it sits too high…. Buuuut maybe a Gobi rack would have enough weight to settle the suspension down a bit instead….Then that’s when you realize what is meant by “4runner lifestyle” and then you go all in and get tattoos and shit)

Hope this is not controversial but personally I don't trust the roof for climbing on top of roof. My rack is overbuilt and I trust it. Weakest link is the roof supporting the weight of rack or tent.

    Do the bfg ko2 285 75 17 actually measure 34"? I thought ko2s ran small.

Do you have an on board air system?

THIS ^. SUV's are already notoriously prone to roll overs because of their higher center of gravity. With more weight added to the highest point, it wouldn't take much for an inexperienced driver to tip it over.

That rack and yours is alot different. So id rethink putting all that weight in a basket that's mounted to the lightweight factory rack.

Here's an alternative location for an oversized spare. Obviously it eats up some cargo room. But, I still manage to fit everything I need in there with it. By placing it directly behind me, I hardly notice it in the rear view mirror.

This is definitely worth considering. I've heard of 4Runners tipping at Black Bear pass, and generally being considered tippy. Some of the overland crowd seem to really load stuff up on the roof rack, and I wonder how much of a factor it has been in these incidents.

I think the best use of a roof rack is to store bulkier items that aren't too heavy. I try to keep the heaviest things as low and centered in the vehicle as possible.
