In Motion 400w Mod

Thinking about doing the in motion 400w mod.



I reached out to ktjo4x4 (the only company actually advertising this mod for the 4R) requesting the install instructions for their “400w in-motion wire harness” but unfortunately they do not have any for the 4R (at least at this time).



Installing the harness itself seems straight forward (based off the Tacoma instructions) but I’m not sure how to gain access to the inverter on the 5th gen 4R.



Does anyone have directions/pics/video/link showing how to do this mod or at least how to remove the rear panel covering the inverter (without damaging the panel itself)?

Just curious why you need 400W AC while driving.

 

Charge a solar generator.

 

There are threads on other forums about doing the 400W wiring mod for pre-2020 models. Not sure if the mod is directly applicable to 2020+ model years since some of the electrical system changed.

There are two ways to get the covers off the top of the wheel wells. Brute force or unscrewing the attachment screws underneath the lid. The unscrewing method requires a little patience and hand contortion by partially lifting the lid.
It’s described in this thread, starting at post #45:

 

@ElectroBoy is giving you the best advice here with the unscrewing method. It sucks while doing it, but it is much easier than removing the entire luggage compartment carpet, and all the screws needed to remove the interior quarter panel trim. Plus you gain some extra "storage bins" in the process.

I can speak to the pre and post 20 electrical changes. The physical wiring at the inverter in the back is pretty much the same, with all the wire colors the same as the pre-20MY with the exception of the speed input wire which changed from light blue (2014-19) to red (20+). The wiring changes are more upstream in the inverter system between the 14-19MY & 20+, but shouldn't present an issue when doing this mod. I have attached a screen shot of the 2020MY wiring diagram below for reference. If you need/would like the 14-19MY as well, just shoot me a PM or an @mention.

@Honz, I would do some searching about the company you mentioned on these forums. You might find that DIY'ing this will be less of a hassle long run, especially if you run into an issue.

 

See post #16 in link. You can just pop off the trim that holds the receptacle. I did it on mine.

Thanks @ElectroBoy that’s a big help! I think I might try and remove the square cover holding the AC and DC outlets first (looks like the inverter harness is right behind the cover). I might not even have to remove the tray on top, but if I do it will be even easier access with square cover removed.

Interesting @Old Red, Ill have to do some digging into that company. You mentioned I might be better of DIY’ing it. Are you speaking of problems/failures with the harness itself or you referring to general customer service issues with them?

 

The one wire that needs to be grounded (to stop the inverter from kicking down to 100w). What bolt/screw are guys using to ground it?

 

The term "Buyer Beware" + company name should get you started on some light reading material on the forums and elsewhere. I think that will say plenty.

Are these only for the 5th gen or are they workable for the 4th gen. It looks like something I would be interested in without getting a proper inverter yet.

 

Does anyone know why Toyota decided to kick the inverter down to just 100W while driving? They must have had a good reason.

I have a question about the premise proposed by the OP. Will your power station even work with the 4Runner’s inverter?

I know for a fact that EcoFlow will not work. So you may want to test it out before modifying the inverter.
