Couldn't secure a ORP for $48k, why?

Fellow Tacoma owner here. Decided I wanted to put my wife in a new ORP. I'll try to lay this out as simple as possible.

Went to the dealership with our Honda Civic sport hatch as a trade. We owe 11k, KBB trade in between 21-23k. I requested 22k but was negotiable.

Dealer MSRP for lunar rock 4runner was $50,600 which I thought was really high.

Offered 48k and was willing to drop to 20k on the trade in. Dealer wouldn't budge and kept quoting me $55-56k OTD.

I don't understand where I went wrong? For reference this is Northern CA.

    Thanks for any insight.

Prices on 4Runners have hardly ever been negotiable.

Your experience is with only one dealer for the new 4Runner? I would not let one dealership stop me. There are many more, as you know.

The other method to purchase you might want to look into, is the Costco car buying program.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Lunar Rock is a very highly sought after color. I'm surprised that color truck is STILL on the lot. The dealership will get the price they want.

Yes, the overall experience just killed it for my wife and I. Just kept getting spoon fed the same sales tactics like "there's hardly any 4runners on lots right now". There was literally 5 new and 3 used on the dealerships lot. After that we went and got some food at in n out and figured this was the new norm for car buying so we went home.

Toyota has always been that way, bub. They aren’t hurting to move vehicles like Dodge.

That's interesting, Arizona dealerships are overflowing with 4 runners - i don't know what trim levels they are, but the lots are full

So was my offer not reasonable at $48k for an ORP?

Would some of you had paid $55k?

First mistake is by going into the dealership and playing on their turf. Communicate through email and do all your research prior.

Second - Don't even mention a trade in until final numbers have been worked out on the new vehicle.

Get a copy of the dealers invoice to see what they paid for the vehicle. Even if they provide this it doesn't mean that's what they actually paid for the vehicle because of "holdbacks" given by the manufacturer to the dealership for selling their products.

Plenty of videos out there on how to properly negotiate vehicles but it will take many hours of your time if you want to learn it the proper way. Best of luck and be patient. Remember don't play on their turf or their rules!!

There are several pricing threads on this forum with fairly recent info. I haven't seen anyone paying $55K for ORP (not including options and taxes), but mostly they aren't that much under MSRP. I paid $200 under MSRP earlier this year, and others recently have done better than that, but as mentioned earlier, Lunar Rock seems to command a premium.

Paying top dollar for a ORP in the prime color except to pay their price and maybe get some free perks on the side.

What is the sticker price???? 55K???

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a discount. But, depending on your region, or dealer, it just might not be in the cards.

During the pandemic, people were paying MSRP, and occasionally thousands over MSRP for all different trims of 4Runners. It seems like prices are coming back down a little bit, and I've even heard of a few people getting discounts. Your best bet is to shop around at other dealerships and see if you can get a better deal.

I think this varies by region, and even by dealer. I got almost $4K off MSRP in 2019, and I have heard of others getting similar discounts before the stupid pandemic.

I literally wrote a check for $55K a couple of weeks ago to secure a 2023 Lunar Rock TRD Off-Road Premium w/ X-Series package with 10K miles on it. I do not regret it one bit!

Negotiate price first, then see what the trade will be. It appears they were giving you there discount through the trade in since 20k+ for a Civic is retail and no room to make a profit.

The second thing. Move from CA.

Talked to a couple Dallas metro area dealers, OTD on 4WD SR5's and it looked like the choice was between $2000 mandatory addons (LoJack, tint, etc.) or nothing coming off the car so mats, trunk organizer, Bronze Package, etc. all pushing it over 50k OTD. There's a bunch of other dealers in town so YMMV but I went used instead.

Appreciate the replies. At the least they humbled me a bit. I thought I made a fair offer with the emphasis on "FAIR".

Our search will continue for a 4runner.

People that got below MSRP the last few years had to "order" and wait a year for an allocation. Vehicles on the lot tend to be priced for people who can't wait. Yeah it's ass-backwards compared to pre-covid.

Price is ALWAYS a function of the market at the time. By that I don't mean that most dealers start off with a gouge increase, but at the end of the day, there is a current going rate for cars, like just about anything. I bought my '23 ORP Lunar Rock in January; market was much tighter at the time, sticker was ~$51, they started at $58 and when all was done (I negotiated for an hour or two and I know how the auto market works and I also know quite a few dealer managers and owners), I paid $53. That was a good deal at that time, but wouldn't be today. Today I'd guess you shouldn't pay more than sticker and you might find one for a couple thousand discount but you would have to search over a much wider area, especially with Lunar Rock (which will be discontinued in 2024).

I'd take your trade to CarMax, Carvana, etc. and get an offer for it. You might do better selling it that way versus trading, maybe not, but good to know what one of those guys would pay.

I paid $55k for my Barcelona Red ORP from Vacaville. Also had to order it as the stock was 2. Luckily some well insured d!ckhead totaled my Taco and paid for my ORP. I wouldn't recommend going that route.

That's a bummer, I like the 4runner but I'd be damned if I let my taco go for it. No offense to the 4runner owners.

I paid a little over $46k on my '23 ORP w/KDSS last month and that was discounted from a sticker over $51k. Mine is MGM though.

Dallas area dealers are notorious for doing several thousand dollar addons and it sucks. We no longer live in Texas and the dealer I bought mine from didn't have a single add-on tacked to this deal which I was happy with.

Exactly Zero. Zip. Nada. Completely stock. Even has the factory air in the tires.
I paid sticker without complaint. 2023 lunar rock ORP. I got to pick the one that was on the transporter already and insist the dealer leave it unmolested when it arrived. No dealer prep; no dealer car wash and “detail.” Wanted the paint pristine so I could detail it myself without whatever junk they put on it at the stealer ship. Turns out, when you deal with the fleet manager who is a complete Toyota fan/geek and have an autistic son who will quote you details on anything Toyota from paint codes on any Toyota color and what model/trim came with it and what year to part numbers- you get an entertaining game of knowledge one upmanship, and a fair deal that took literally 10 mins to finalize. Good communication while truck is being moved and a quick call when it arrives for pickup.

easily the best dealership experience in 20+ car deals and a fair price on a kickass Japanese made vehicle with literally zero factory defects.

did I shop around for a few bucks cheaper? No. My time is worth a lot so getting it done fast and with some guarantee it’s going to be what I want was paramount and worth more than shopping around.

go see Mike the fleet manager at South Coast Toyota for the best sales experience. Tell him what you want; he will get it (they get massive allocations due to their sales)
And it will be fair. Lowest price? Maybe not. But will it be just the way you want it and he will make it right if it isn’t. And he has hookups for everything.

I got $5400 off each of our Limiteds. The broker was offering $4500 off ORP and Pros for MSRP. Legit dealer, matched the highest trade offer I received (Carvana) for both trade ins and didn’t play games when I arrived to do the paperwork. I have both 4 Runners in my garage and couldn’t be happier. If you’re interested in contacting the broker, I will PM you his contact info. His dealer network is in the northeast.
