    And I quit smoking cigs 9 1/2 years ago. A guy I knew bought a hundred acres and let me hunt it so. You have to beat their nose!

    I haven't seen it in the bottles here locally, mostly cans. I know the PX has bottles and a great selection of American beers. Only 7 more days to go and heading home!

    No "sir" here, bud, I was a Sgt. Heck, I was a Sgt for a loooong time. Dead MOS. F-4 Radar, I level. They were just transitioning to F/A-18s.
    When I finally got out, I was senior Sgt in the Corps. Time in Grade, Time in Service, you pick, I was Senior. Out of all of us, in our MOS, in the 7 years I was a Sgt, they only promoted 4 of us to SSgt., which is why. Oh well. After 10 years in, though, I wasn't going to cross deck to a MOS that had me at sea 8 months a year. I had a family, and a couple acres of property, in Yuma to think about.

    Spent most of my time in Yuma, spent a bit over a year as a Rifle/Pistol Coach, there in Yuma, and they sent me to Beaufort for the last year, and we went to Japan for the last F-4 det. THE last F-4 det of all. It was the last F-4 squadron to transition, and they did when we got back from Japan. That was my que to move on. Not the most thrilling career, but heck, it was mine :D

    Have fun!
    Pat☺

    I wanted to mention: I love that Maker's Mark! It goes down so smooth. Great stuff!

    My property in Yuma, which I sold when I moved to Oregon back in 06, is right on one of the main crossings of the Colorado from Mexico. Less than 1/4 mile from the river. I'm really glad I got out when I did!!!

    I don’t know what it is about that site but when I’m in Africa I can view the forum, but I can’t post on it.

    First, Atlanta Duty Free apparently gets all the Blantons!

    And here’s what a $35 USD dinner in South Africa looks like. Chefs tasting menu with a nice bottle of wine.

    Another restaurant on a “wine farm” as they came them. Great view, great wine, great food. No pics of the food or drink though, this was a dinner with a few C’s from aerospace companies. IMG_5977.jpg

    I managed to score some epic bottles while down there that came home with me.

    3 bottles of Cascahuin 11 Brix & 2 bottles of Cascahuin Extra Anejo

    11 Brix is a special limited bottle single run. They made one batch and will never make a seconds. Its very hard to come by and when you do find it, it’s typically at least $300 and as high as $500 a bottle. I found them in Africa sitting on shelves. The first bottle was $100 USD, the other two bottles at a different shop were $112 USD each.

    Expensive bottles aren’t bad when you factor how much you get.

    A $30 bottle of wine, which isn’t expensive, gets you 4 drinks at $7.50 a drink. $120 bottle of alcohol gets you 16 drinks also at $7.50 a drink.

    We did a blind tequila tasting yesterday evening.

    The goal was to compare highly rated, traditionally made, still strength blancos that are 98 proof or higher.

    Entries (lowest to highest ABV):
    * Gran Dovejo Blanco High Proof, 98 Proof, NOM 1414, TMM Panel Rated @ 90
    * Don Fulano Blanco Fuerte, 100 Proof, NOM 1146, TMM Panel Rated @ 88
    * Wild Common Still Strength, 100 Proof, NOM 1123, TMM Panel Rated @ 91
    * Arette Fuerte Artesanal 101 Blanco, 101 Proof, NOM 1109, TMM Panel Rated @ 87
    * Suerte Still Strength, 104 Proof, NOM 1530, TMM Panel Rated @ 88
    * Cascahuin 11 Brix, 106 Proof, NOM 1123, TMM Panel Rated @ 90
    * G4 Blanco 108, 108 Proof, NOM 1579, TMM Panel Rated @ 90
    * Tapatio Blanco 110, 110 Proof, NOM 1139, TMM Panel Rated @ 89

    IMG_6245.jpg

    Process:
    While Morgan was away, I poured 1 oz of each tequila into matching glasses and recorded the order as I went, 1-8 left to right. Then I went away and without knowing what was poured in each glass, Morgan labeled each glass by color and recorded the order as she went, 1-8 left to right and then mixed the glasses around. The end result is I knew what order they were poured in, but they were mixed up now, and Morgan knew what order the colors went on, but didn’t know what was in each of the glasses. A true blind test that at the end we would use our 2 individual notes together to decode the colors into a key of what was in each glass. We recognize 8 high proofs is a lot. I’m sure at some point whether you notice it or not, you’re starting to burn out your nose and palate a bit. We took our time. We had coffee beans to sniff and water to sip to neutralize the senses a bit. All said and done, we spent an hour and a half going through these.

    Notes:
    -All of the top 4 were exceptional.
    -We both agreed on the top spot, both the nose and palate took top honors.
    -We both had the same tequilas in 2nd and 3rd place, but in opposite order. After some discussion and revisiting them both we did reach a consensus.
    -We both agreed on 4th place.
    -We both felt like any preferences between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th could flip flop from day to day. We will redo another blind with just the top 4.
    -We agreed on 5th and 6th place.
    -There was some debate over 7th and 8th but they were clearly the bottom two. In the end 7th place had the better palate and 8th place had the better nose.

    Results:
    1st Place
    - G4 Blanco 108
    2nd Place
    - Gran Dovejo Blanco High Proof
    3rd Place
    - Don Fulano Blanco Fuerte
    4th Place
    - Suerte Still Strength
    5th Place
    - Cascahuin 11 Brix
    6th Place
    - Tapatio Blanco 110
    7th Place
    - Wild Common Still Strength
    8th Place
    - Arette Fuerte Artesanal 101 Blanco

    We had so much fun doing these, we’re going to do these more often.
