There's no gain from them even in replacement cost. Even under dusty conditions, Toyota recommends a replacement at 36K miles or 3 years and simple inspections until then. A Wix replacement is $30 while a K&N is $65 so it will take you over 6 years or 72K miles to cover the cost of a K&N. Plus they are known to pass more dirt than paper.

Thanks for the feedback. Used it on my Tacoma with no issues. Will stick with OEM for now.

Placebo. If you want more fictional horsepower, rip out the carbon filter in the airbox lid when you aren't in California

BTW, Denso sells the primary air filter under P/N 143-3025, available from indie parts stores or online. Might save you some money avoiding Toyota and dealer markups.

I can honestly say that I didn't have issues running one on my Ranger but I just wouldn't now because there's no reason to.

Well, I went and got a Purolator One filter. Looks just like the thick OEM one with the pre-filter and truck is back to feeling normal again after running the thinner filter for a couple weeks.

I've had no issues what so ever. Been running them on every vehicle for engine and air cabin filter. Personally, I don't run them for any type of claimed gains, only the re usable factor. 2 cleanings and you've paid for it.

After another day running the Purolator One, the difference is night and day compared to the thin Toyota filter.

Now I’m wishing one of you would go get a Purolator to try in place of the thin filter so you can tell me this is all in my head. But seriously, the truck runs so much better. I’m amazed.

Interesting. I'll have to pick one up next time I change the filter, I've been buying the factory Toyota filters off Amazon, they've been coming in with the pre-filter.

I don’t know enough about engines, filters, and air flow dynamics to speculate… but someone here pointed out the new thinner OEM filter has more pleats to compensate for the decrease in overall thickness from the original OEM filter.

I’ll point out this would also decrease the amount of “square inches” for air to pass through the filter’s surface plane.

If you increase the number of pleats to make the filter thinner but retain the same surface area of the filter medium, you’d also have to decrease the porosity of the filter to maintain the same amount of airflow.

You can remove the air filter and the truck will run the same.

What if you ran a very restrictive filter? What effect would that have?

A couple photos I grabbed off Amazon. New thin vs old thick OEM filters. And the Purolator, which has a metal screen over the top for reasons unknown.

I really liked the thick filter mine came with from the factory, but not because I could tell a difference. I’ve run the purolator one, the toyota OE thin replacement, and NAPA/Wix thick filter with prefilter. Couldn’t tell a lick of difference.

There is absolutely no measurable difference between all three. It's all placebo.
I had the thicker one last year, changed it to what the dealer had, which was the thinner one this year and will now get the Purolator.

Me too. Wholesale Toyota parts online. I have gotten several counterfeit parts from Amazon. I buy Toyota Wholesale online now. Prices are not that bad for real quality.

Bumping this thread and created an account finally. Called three local dealers here in Denver. Two of them do not sell the 17801-38051 and will only sell the 17801-YZZ13. Luckily the third one either had back stock or still gets them in. Parts guy said, “You can get any part in the YZZ budget but we can also source true factory parts.” So that was reassuring that Toyota still has them out there. Just have to find a place that does that. I picked up 2 today just in case they do not stock in the future. Also to note the YZZ13 is $1 cheaper haha.

Since I had a YZZ13 in my air box I figured I would do some measuring to figure out if more pleats = more surface area. While doing this I was surprised and what else I found.

    17801-YZZ13: USA Denso
    - pleats: 131
    - pleat dimensions: w- 8.6563” h- 1.0938”
    - Filter surface area formula (SA=(w*h)*(pleats*2)) pleat count is each tip. Air is sucked through both faces of pleat hence why pleat number is multiplied by 2.
    - Filter surface area: 2,480.557 in^2

Things I noticed about this filter are:
    - gasket has a lot of porosity and seems to be a softer durometer.
    - very flexible filter (torsional rigidity)
    - air box clips, clip on loosely
    - Gasket thickness (0.427”)
    - Filter media seems to be the same as OEM Factory filter. No way for me to actually test it.

    17801-38051: Japan Denso Factory Filter
    - pleats: 107
    - pleat dimensions: w- 8.6563” h- 1.875”
    - Filter surface area formula (SA=(w*h)*(pleats*2)) pleat count is each tip. Air is sucked through both faces of pleat hence why pleat number is multiplied by 2.
    - Filter surface area: 3,473.320 in^2

Things I noticed about this filter are:
    - gasket has no porosity and is very smooth. Also seems to be a harder durometer.
    - very stiff filter (torsional rigidity)
    - air box clips, clip on very tight
    - Gasket thickness (0.427”)
    - Filter media seems to be the same as OEM USA filter. No way for me to actually test it.

Seems like that big of a difference in surface area is significant to airflow if the filter media is the same.

Anything with AZ or YZZ in the part # is economy grade. Learned that from TCCN video today. I've been buying WIX air filters off A M azon for about 20$.

I almost went that route if I could not find the 17801-38051. Wix and Purolator make great filters! I just wanted to post the details I found since I could not find them while researching.
