Thanks for the addition! I picked up a 2004 4runner SR5 V6 and I'm in the process of trying to find any information on how to fix the transfer case and the transfer case actuator. It has no gears, sometimes you can get it to partially go in to forward and reverse if you don't put much pressure on it (ex. driving on flat ground-otherwise it just sits and grinds). Hopefully I can find some information in old forums or with help. Tearing apart the actuator right now but I can't find a manual at the moment so kind of going blind at it.

Welcome to the forum from Wisconsin!

Good luck with your transfer case. The actuators can fail if they're not exercised regularly.

Does the vehicle not move at all, then? I'm curious what you mean by:

"sometimes you can get it to partially go in to forward and reverse if you don't put much pressure on it"

This sounds like a transmission issue. Or, maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Thank you guys. I live in S/Central Wisconsin but didn't put it in and don't know how to edit it, haha....the guy I got it from must've had it stick in 4x4 Hi long enough it smoked the right front outboard shaft and it just clatters and doesn't catch and quit driving it when going down the road it just quit moving and just grinds from the transfer case. I messed with the dial and coukd get it to partially catch gears just to limp it rather than push it. I took the actuator apart both motors were still good so I sold the connections on them I found a video that's supposedly shows how to sync the gears and put the box part back together without splitting the transfer case period but when you push the rods back in to put the box back on the top rod does not go all the way into the transfer case all the way the way it looks so it's still grinds. I'm assuming that rod got bent because you can get it to slide in and out pretty easily but if you turn the driveshaft a little bit to where it rotates the gears it binds up and get stuck to where you have to pry it a little bit to move.
