Looking for insight from those who left a v8 and came to the 4Runner

Came from a GMC Sierra with a 5.3. Slight adjustment. Tows my Pontoon fine. A bit on a puppy going up Vail Pass Saturday. All good it’s a keeper

 

that is exactly the reason i bought mine. if i wanna hot rod i'll get a mustang. i wanted a solid, reliable and good off roader.

its gonna be a sad day when all we can buy is a turbo-something. of course i'm part of an older generation and doesn't like all the tech advances. i like solid, less complicated engines.

 

Same here for why I bought a 4Runner. GM doesn't have a solid off-road SUV anymore as the Tahoe is too large and the Blazer/Acadia are unibody crossovers, and Ford uses a turbo in the Bronco/Bronco Sport. Jeeps are just too expensive.

 

jeeps....might be good off road but they drive like something i've never seen. my buddy had a 4 door wrangler and that thing was so twitchy it was distracting. a little too cramped as well. not sure those motors are capable of 300k miles either.

 

So update on where I stand. Put my deposit down today for a 2024 TRD Pro in the Underground color. Currently in the build process and hoping to take delivery towards the end of November or early December. Thanks again for all of the feedback in this thread. Found it very helpful.

 

I will enter this arena by saying I did not come from a V-8, i had a 2004 Dodge Viper truck. Let’s just say i shocked many V-8 owners, and highway miles were 20-22 mpg with the 6-speed Tremec. I daily drove it for 9-yrs.

 

Except for KDSS, I think?

 

Higher build quality than the already high build quality GX and 4Runner? If so, wow!

 

Your experience and mine are almost identical. 5 days ago I traded in my 2013 Yukon SLT with the 5.3L for my new-to-me 4Runner. Your Yukon looks pretty good and I'm surprised the door mouldings are still in good shape since mine feel off years ago after a couple trips to Arizona.

The Yukon is and feels significantly larger interior space-wise. I'll get to find out how negatively this aspect will affect me on the next family road trip.
The longer term items I was concerned with on the GMC Yukon 5.3L:
Steering position sensor failure - this requires near full removal of the steering column to replace.
Lifter failure
Torque Converter wear to failure as mileage increased toward 150K
Transmission failure if torque converter failure wasn't caught early

The interior plastic was crap. The dash cracked by 75K miles and I installed a molded cover over the dash instead of going through the effort to remove/replace. The door handle pulls broke in the middle leaving them overly soft and flexible.
