C'mon, in 1969 they were still wrapping babies in cellophane, and doctors recommended Camel

Mine was also stuck fast, to the pan itself, but not extruded in any way into the hole. It appeared to be in great condition other than that and was sealing fine. The drain plug was not over-torqued, as an aside. I tried to peel it off with my finger nail, but that's it. In the end I left it as is. Maybe they are glued on from the factory for ease of assembly?

Sorry to bring up this older thread but I’m in a hurry and the same thing happened to me. Dealer changed the oil last time and over torqued the plug bolt and I can get the old washer off. I tried a putty knife but it’s not moving and I’m not sure if the pan has a slightly raised portion that the washer contacts with or not. Will try and post a pic. What do you guys think? Can I put another washer on that? I’m short on time. Thanks.IMG_2104.jpg

No. Don't put another washer on it. Reuse if you can't get it off and haven't marred it all up.

Chances are the torque squeeze some of the soft metal up into the threads. That's where it is stuck.

I used a plastic trim tool or plastic chisel to hit it on the side. Couple of good whacks and it will come off

Nope. It's the crush washer. The ones from Toyota have a blue coating on both sides

I can't tell if you're being serious as I'm currently 22 hours into a 24 hour water fast but I wouldn't use plumbers tape. Can't imagine wanting pieces of that breaking off and getting stuck on the oil pickup screen. Over time, that could end up costing way more $$$ than a proper crush washer.

Ok, I tried the plastic trim tool already with no luck and so used a putty knife and that kinda started to peel some of that blue rubber off. I’ll try tapping it with the plastic trim tool again but if no luck then best bet is to reuse the stick one and NOT double up on the washers right? Thanks.

The dealer monkeys also over torqued the filter plug and put some type of silicone tab on it. They also did that with the plug bolt. Not sure why. I can’t even get the filter plug off at all so I had to skip changing the plug oring. Geez!IMG_2101.jpg

Right. Don't double up the washer. The crush washer is the aluminum chunk, not just the blue surface. Put the trim tool or putty knife as flat as you can against the pan to knock the whole washer off.

Sometime resinserting, tightening and removing the drain plug will loosen the area where it is stuck.

If it was mine, it would come off. Not sure what I would have to resort to but it would definitely be coming off somehow.

I hate the yota canister filters. Vowed to never own a Toyota product again, after my experience with a Sienna, which endured a cracked plastic canister and a broken 3rd party alu filter. Here I am though.. I love pain

Mine was an aggravating beast first time getting it off, Finally was able to get a clean wack on it with a small brass punch lined up on the crush washer lip only.

Straight from the factory was actually fine. I did the first oil change at 3k and it seems like they actually used a torque wrench as it was fairly easy to remove. Drain plug washer came right off and filter and filter plug came out as they should. Took it to dealer for 8k oil change and they give me Superman tight everywhere.

Yes, Sir. Probably spent a good twenty plus minutes trying different techniques before popping it off with no pan damage. Drain plug gasket only, Drain plug, no issue.

Well so far it’s holding. Checked it after 30 mile trip and no leaks. Hope it stays like that. Going to the dealer next oil change and having a chat with them and they can deal with popping off the old washer they imbedded into the pan.

Did you figure out what the blob of silicone was on the filter housing? I'd make sure the gorilla that changed it at 3k didn't crack it and try to seal it with silicone.

Equally bad if they sealed it with silicone. It's meant to come off.

I’m not sure what that blob is about but I’m under the impression it’s them validating they did the service and so they are aware someone else did it when the blobs arn’t there. I did the 3K but the gorillas did the 8k. Next oil change will be at the dealer and so I’ll ask them at that time and request they don’t over torque anything as I will be doing the service every other oil change.

My first one was overtorqued and very hard to dislodge. It took a thin-blade screwdriver and a couple firm taps with a hammer. I haven't had trouble since then.

I’m not sure if some washers are more bonded to the pan than others from the factory, but my 06 sienna had the original drain plug washer stuck to it for at least the first 150k miles. Our 18 highlander and 21 4runner, both with over 50k miles, are still on the original washers. I do my own oil changes. I always clean everything well before putting drain plug on, and do a few gentle tighten-loosen cycles to “lap” the plug against the surface of the washer. No leaks ever.

I’ve tried to take all three off, but after surviving a few hard taps with a flat blades screwdriver against the side of the washer, I left them there.
