Recently bought a 2021 Toyota 4runner sr5. I had no issues, no shaking, no brake shake or anything until I got new tires and wheels. I took the 4runner back to the tire dealer and they road force balanced my tires which eliminated the driving steering wheel shake but now I still have a shaking steering wheel when I brake. The tire shop said it's a brake issue and I am currently scheduled to take it to my mechanic next week. Has anyone experienced this. I know there are tons of threads about steering wheel shake but I am only experiencing it when braking now since the new tires and wheels. Tires are michelin defender ltx m s and wheels are trd pro wheels.

Check rotors and pads. Normally wrapped rotors and/or debris lodged between pads causes steering vibration if the tyres are ruled out.
However, since you did nothing to the brakes, it has to be something they did during tire installation. Torquing the nuts is a great suggestion.

Try to torque the lugs properly.

I bet the lazy ass at the tire shop used an impact.

Vibration in steering wheel when braking is usually warped rotors. Might talk to a shop about having them turned/smoothed and see if that fixes it. Probably will. BTW, rotors can warp even with low miles. Get'm really hot with a long downhill braking scenario at higher speed, then splash through a deep puddle of icy-cold water and voila.

So they were torqued to 120 I put them at 85 much better now but still some shake when braking. Is it possible the over tightened lugs damaged the brakes somehow? Thanks for your suggestion.

A small bit of dirt or something got between the rotor and hub during install, perhaps? I don't believe rotors can actually warp in the true sense of the word without getting red hot. If it's a rotor problem, it's more likely uneven deposits of brake pad material onto the rotor surface(s). At least, according to several articles I've read. In your case, it would be odd for a rotor problem to develop right after a tire change.

Perhaps you're right. I just thought the timing was funny as it started the day I got the new wheels and tires. Thank you!

I don't have proof but I've heard over torquing can cause the rotors to warp.

It may be coincidence but the couple times we got tires changed and I did not check the lug nuts after we got the shakes a little while after and ended up needing a brake job.

Yeah this is my thought. I bought this car two weeks ago and have had no brake issues. My mechanic inspected the car before I took possession and said it needed no work. Ah well I guess I won't he using this tire shop again.

With over-torqueing being a possibility, I suppose also an imperfection in the wheel itself could cause similar symptoms. Forgot that OP got tires AND wheels. Swapping front to rear may give clues.
