Can anyone recommend a fridge/freezer that will work in a 2022 4Runner? I am transporting 100 frozen quail ( for my birds ) from Pennsylvania to NM and will be on the road for 5 days.

I can’t recommend a refrigerator, but I’ve used dry ice to transport 1/4 share of beef and it worked perfect. I would think 5 days is a bit of a stretch and you would need to refill at some point.

Any fridge will work in the 4Runner, all depends how big you want to go. 100 frozen quail seem like they would take up a lot of space(?) so you may need a larger fridge/freezer. I use an Engel fridge/freezer when I travel and love it. I've had it down to zero degrees fahrenheit without it missing a beat. What you'll have to figure out is how to keep the fridge running when the truck is turned off. I use a Jackery to power mine when the truck isn't on.

The 100 frozen quail will fit in a 48 quart ice chest. As long as they stay cold, they will be good for the birds to eat. It would be nice to keep them frozen.

I just went through a lot of research on this. While you need a larger unit than the 30-qt. I bought, this may help with one consideration: the fridge must be powered 24/7 but your truck likely won’t be. The fridge won’t run the whole time but it needs power. You can lug it inside and plug it in or provide continuous power in your 4R.

There are several ways to do this but to keep this brief, the best (simplest, cheapest) way I found was to buy a Jackery or a similar power unit. Plug the Jackery into the truck so it charges when the engine is running. Plug the the fridge into the Jackery, which should easily handle an overnight of running the fridge.

This is my road trip setup. On travel days, the fridge goes in the back seat within easy reach. Just driving around, it’s in the cargo area both to be hidden under the retractable cover and b/c I don’t need frequent access. The fridge cord reaches either place. The cord clips are made for Chistmas lights and have that 3M removeable adhesive.

The quail won’t need 24 hour power. They are frozen solid when I put them in the 12v freezer. And still should be semi frozen after sitting at night without power. Then driving for 8 hours should freeze solid again. If I need to take the fridge into the room at night, I can do that. As long as they stay cold, my birds will still eat them. This is the refrige/freezer I ordered. 9828613F-F20A-4168-8E00-2711EA2EF8CE.png

    There are 12v fridge/freezers that cool to -8 F.

Scottiezilla, I have a Harris Hawk and a red tail Hawk with me on this trip. I also have a golden eagle that I left at my buddies house in Albuquerque. These are hunting birds and only eat meat. The quail were raised by the Amish in York, Pa. There are many quail breeders across the US that sell them for human and animal consumption.

Tank010, I brought some frozen quail with me on my travels from NM to Pa. The birds will eat the quail when it is frozen ( which helps keep their beaks trimmed), but, you can also feed the quail defrosted.

They have great Black Friday sales. Best compressor on the market. I bring frozen seafood back from the coast to Colorado with it. I just unplugged mine and cleaned it. I think it was turned on for over a year. Now I don't think it can hold 100 birds but it's a great travel freezer

I used to see quail regularly until explosion of fox and coyotes here. Haven't seen any in 20 years, but have to stop for wild turkey crossing

Kolter45, I bought this one. I plugged it in this morning and did my regular driving to see how it worked. It was defiantly cold by the time I got home. I think I’ll be able to get between 60-80 quail in it and the rest will go in my regular ice chest that stays in my trailer for the ride to NM.

Hello. I have one question that I want to make sure I'm doing this right, but I don't need to run my propane if I have a 12V fridge is this correct, I just make sure that my inverter is run, right? Thank you for your comments.

I was able to get 88 frozen quail into the freezer. Only one bag (8 to a bag) went into the ice chest for the trip home. That worked out perfectly because I needed a few quail to feed the birds on the way home.

Made it to Washington DC in 4 hours. Checked the quail and all were frozen solid. Will check them again tomorrow morning. We will be here till Monday morning. This is the view of the Pentagon from my daughters apartment.

We made it home ( New Mexico) last night. We were on the road form Monday till Friday night. The freezer worked perfectly and kept the quail frozen hard as a rock. During the day, the freezer would run while we drove and the quail would stay frozen at night when the car was not running.
