    Good Afternoon,

I currently have a 2022 4Runner Limited and have a Volvo dealer offering a "decent"
price on the lease for a new 2023 Volvo XC90 Momentum Plus.

Has anyone cross shopped these two models / owned an XC90 for any time period?

    Interested in thoughts.

    Thank you in advance.

Those vehicles do not compete in the same market. The Volvo is a tall car while the Runner is a truck.

Volvo is not what they used to be and have dropped to modern German car quality. They dropped the supercharger from the turbo/supercharged/EV models because it was a problematic setup. I'd lease it if you really wanted it.

The Volvo could make a great lease. The 4Runner you buy and keep.

I'm going off of Savageese said about them since he owned one for a period and it was just in the shop most of the time. It was dumped for a X7.

I've leased 2 XC90's and owned 2 4Runners. They're completely different animals. The Volvo is great- to lease. Would never own one. As referenced above, known brake and rotor issues, etc. It's a great vehicle, and safe as anything on the road, but again, 36mo is probably the sweet spot. For me, it's a great vehicle, as long as I know I have a 4Runner in the other garage bay.

    To the OP-

That's definitely an interesting cross shop. But, I think that if my lifestyle didn't dictate driving a heavy ass gas guzzling BOF SUV, I'd be very tempted to get something a little bit more fuel efficient.

    Have you driven the Volvo?

    Okay, so here goes...

We owned an XC60 with the T6 engine. It's the same platform as the XC90, so basically the XC90 is like a bigger version of it.

During our ownership, we had zero mechanical problems. Over the course of five years, we put close to 90k miles on it. It was a great vehicle.

The ONLY reasons why we didn't get another one were: 1) Model refresh is coming at some point; and 2) Income reduction, so needed to get something cheaper...that's how I ended up in my 4Runner, coincidentally.

I've taken the XC60 off-road, nothing that would be considered rock crawling, but more along the lines of what I would consider overlanding or Subaru type driving. It did fine.

Honestly speaking, if you're not taking your 4Runner off-road, the XC90 is a better on-road vehicle. The ride is better. The seats are better. The sound system is better. The infotainment system is better. The cargo capacity is better.

    Need I say more?

Now here's the thing...the 4Runner is going to be hands down the best driving vehicle you can get that is also capable off-road, unless we're talking a Land Cruiser or perhaps a slightly modded Nissan Armada (aka Patrol).

The solution is clear: get some skids, some all terrains, and go tear up your plastics so you can get some beefy bumpers put on it.

Thank you all for your thorough replies.

I have always been a car enthusiast and have owned a number of SUVs in the past that I would never own out of warranty (Range Rover Sports).

Being a Scandinavian, I have been half tempted to take the Volvo plunge to support our ancestors. However, since Volvo is Chinese owned as of late,
this doesn't make a difference any longer.

I bought a new '22 Limited in Midnight Black during the pandemic as I have always loved the look of them. Frankly, I love the way it drives,
the ride height, the aggressive look, and the fact is is well equipped, however, not full of future problematic electric/computer screens/turbo issues/etc., etc.

I always have a Porsche 911 around as a toy. They are great vehicles and hold their value well. However, they are for fun and do require a fair amount of
    maintenance; especially if tracked.

I believe I am going to trade for a new '23 Limited in White and stay with the 4Runner for my main driver. The '23 Limiteds are nicely available and I like
    the heated steering wheel....Finally.

Again, thank you all for the prompt and thorough replies.

Look at the GX if you want something more fancy. Still a great vehicle and there's still some NOS V8s out there.

Just looked it up. XC90 turning radius is 39.7 feet. 4Runner’s is 37.4 feet. Probably technically the turning diameter.

I do like the GX as well and have strongly considered one. However, for some reason, I keep going back to the 4Runner Limiteds. Both are great trucks.

I am trading in to get the newest 4Runner with the V6 as well as picking up the heated steering wheel. I also prefer a color besides black on the Limited I have determined. The chrome blends better with a white or similar shade.

I have never felt so dirty in my life as the times I have set foot in Lexus dealers. They all behave scummy, even by dealer standards, because they attract so many customers who don't question anything.

BMW dealers in certain markets are slightly less bad, although in high income areas they are just as horrible, if not more so. Audi dealers have been catapulted into a similar position over the past 15-20 years.

I just can't see myself ever going through with buying a Lexus. I came close, and then decided I'd rather torture myself by buying an Alfa Romeo...probably the best driving vehicle in its class at anywhere close to its price point, but I kept the service manager's card in my wallet.

All in all, it could be worse...

It doesn't matter how awesome a car that Kia builds, I have no interest in ever having to deal with a Kia dealership, where they have a captive audience due to other reasons...although that one day will change once they price themselves out of that market and we get either Chinese brands entering the market.

It'd be nice to see Mahindra make an effort here to at least get some interesting competition.

My best friend's wife had a xc90 and 850R. My mother currently has a s60 T6. If you're wanting reliable safety, volvo is at the top. I wouldn't say anything in the overlanding to rough terrain depts though.

If you want to win SCCA races in a wagon safely, then volvo is your choice. Just wouldn't pick the XC90 for a day on the sandy beach or backwoods 4x4 adventure.

Not in the same class as the XC90 or 60, but I just did a 36 month leased on a 2024 XC40 AWD to be used as my daily driver. The XC40 replaced a 2019 4Runner Limited (totaled in an accident). The improvements to the Google software are significate over the earlier versions. I like the infotainment system and the ability to load 3rd party applications, but I am an Android guy - I can see Apple folks having some issues. It's a very comfortable ride and Volvo has some of the most aggressive lease deals in the market. It came with 20" curb rash magnet wheels which I replaced with 18". I am averaging 31mpg - downside is the need for premium gas - but total fuel cost is comparable with the 4R Limited's 21mpg. Build quality seems solid (my VIN starts with a Y so built in Sweden) - but it's not as solid as my 4Runner - I still have a 2022 TRD ORP.

Here is my XC40 with Kong 18" wheels and Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus tires.

    Same experience.

Went in to buy a $50K car on the spot and was treated like some kind of dirtbag.

Left and bought a $60K car at a different dealer (and brand) the same day.

    Dumbasses.

Everyone I know whose had a modern Volvo has become familiar with their local Volvo dealer service department. If you’re used to decades of Toyota/Lexus/Honda reliability, it’s going to be a big adjustment.

With that said, there are many people who, unlike me, don’t desire to drive the same vehicle long term. If you want a disposable luxury leasemobile that may need a few trips to the dealer before dumping, sure…..but in that case, I’d just go with bmw.

Lexus aside, that luxury large SUV segment is full of overcomplicated, overpriced, disposable tech turds imo. I’d never do it but whatever floats your boat.
