I just got my 2023 TRD ORP and I have heard all types of advice on the first oil change. From 500 miles non synthetic to 5000 synthetic. I would welcome any advice as I want to keep this car running for the long haul.

Welcome to the forum. I would not use non-synthetic under any circumstances since the factory fill is synthetic. You will hear many varying suggestions. The only reason to deviate from the manufacturer guidance is to get the “break-in wear products” out of the engine sooner. Ideally the filter does that to eliminate unnecessary wear from circulating the fine metallic wear particles thru the engine. Many here (me included) change the oil the first time sooner than 10,000 miles. I did mine at 1500 miles and will use a 5000 mile change frequency mainly because I like doing it, and want it to last 15 years and 250,000 miles. But not everyone does. More important than doing this is getting the oil changed correctly whenever it is done. There are human errors that can damage your engine like: not installing a filter element after removing the dirty one, using the wrong filter element such that the oil bypasses the filter, not installing the o-rings in the filter properly resulting in all your oil leaking out, not replacing the drain bolt gasket, over tightening filters, drain bolts, skid plate bolts and not properly filling the engine with the correct oil that meets spec and proper volume. In summary, getting it done right is more important than the change frequency. If you don’t know how to do it, I would find someone you trust who does. Typically the less experience workers do these things at the dealer. I would trust a dealer more than a “quick-lube, jiffy-lube” type place. There is a forum member here who just had all his oil drain out after the dealer changed it and he doesn’t know if his engine was damaged and how much if it was. You have a high quality vehicle built in one of the best factory’s on the Earth. Enjoy it!

Every 5K miles with whatever off the shelf oil brand of the correct viscosity will do just fine.

Hello maroria, last year I had an issue with dealership overfilling 30oz of oil on our 2020 Tacoma. Since then we traded vehicle in for our 4runner. I recently changed the 4runners oil myself at around 2700 miles. I planned a couple hours for the job as I'm older and like to take my time. I purchased filters/gaskets from Dealership, oil from Walmart 0W-20 full synthetic Mobil 1 for Toyotas and other vehicles now labeled as suitable for hybrids. I buy the 12 quart box. I ended up cleaning the oil filter housing, I then waited for all the oil to drain before installing new drain plug gasket and new filter. 6.6 quarts of the good stuff and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just have the proper oil housing filter wrench and all necessary parts, tools and equipment needed. Be sure and watch a couple YouTube videos and recheck the oil level on dipstick a couple times. Every time we start the 4runner I love the smooth sound knowing I'm caring for it and it was done correctly, priceless.

Owner's manual says break-in is 1000 mi, so you can get the first oil change then if you want, and every 5000 mi thereafter as normal.

Being in FL, you can pretty much use any of the common viscosities on store shelves: 0W20, 5W20, 0W30, or 5W30.

First at 1000, then every 5000, oil and filter. Simple and straightforward! Any off shelf oil with 0W20 viscosity, I prefer Mobil 1.

I picked up my TRD ORP last.. Wednesday? and have 250 miles on it already. Plan on changing the oil at 1,500 miles, next at 5,000 and then every 7,500 thereafter. I am going to go to the Dealer and paying out of pocket for it the first time, as I want it to show on the vehicles service history.

One thing I have learned about buying/selling Toyota vehicles (I am not a dealer, but have owned 7 Toyotas), is that people who buy these vehicles WILL be checking the carfax and/or possibly the Toyota service history (you can achieve this easily by logging into the Toyota Owners Site and entering the VIN). I just prefer to be able to fall back on solid documented proof that it was done. YMMV.

1st oil change at 700 miles, tiny specks of metal in pleats of oil filter. 2nd oil change at 2,100 miles, 1 or 2 specks in oil filter, very tiny. Next oil change at 5,000 miles and continue. Toyota oil & filter. Drive for 1/2 million miles, then trade in for another.
