Hello, I'm looking to undercoat my new 4runner with woolwax before winter. Nowhere to get this done where I live so I'm going to do it myself.

I dont have a compressor or spray set up, so I'm looking at using the aerosol cans: https://woolwax.ca/products/woolwax®-spray-4-can-kits-straw-clear?_pos=7&_fid=83ad85fe7&_ss=c

Anyone here have experience doing this at home with the aerosol cans, and any tips or application advice?

I've seen contradictory feedback on rubber application - some people say you can spray rubber hoses etc and they wont swell, some people say not too. This is my first experience with this kind of spray on underbody protection stuff and I dont want to mess it up.

I used to spray my old truck's frame/underside with Fluid Film aerosol cans every year. For the cost of aerosol cans, if you're gonna be doing this every year it may be worth the investment to get a cheap compressor. Not to mention the convenience factor.

Definitely get an extension hose with a multi-directional tip like this:
    https://www.woolwaxusa.com/Extension-Wand-with-360-degree-for-spray-cans_p_32.html
For spraying inside the frame or other tight spots where you can't get close enough with the can.

If you drip woolwax all over your garage floor it will take a while for the smell to go away so maybe put a tarp or plastic sheet down first if the smell annoys you. Of course, your car is gonna smell like woolwax for a bit but that seems to dissipate more quickly than if you get it all over concrete in your garage.

I just did mine in the garage with it up on ramps. I spent 1.5 hours or so and did what I believe is a pretty good job. I put down an old crappy rug to roll around on and don't think it made much of a mess or left much of a smell. My wife would definitely have complained if it did. I bought the spray aerosol kind which included a 24 inch or so tube to be able to reach deep into the frame. Now to see how it wears as we get into the snow season here. I did smell some of the over spray burning off after my first 30 minute drive. 1-2 weeks later thats all gone. It sure would have been easier up on a lift. Maybe next time...

Agreed. Takes about 1.5-2hrs. You can rent or borrow a solid pancake compressor. Just takes time. I’d do it outside and save yourself from trying to clean up or worry about clean up at all. Be sure to get the extension to get down into the frame rails. The frame has black plastic caps you can remove to slide the hose into. I used about two to three full jars of the wool wax. Loved it and learned where everything was under there. Avoid brakes and wheel areas at all costs. Also, try not to spray your muffler or tailpipe if possible. Other than that you’ll do great!

Besides frame rails, take the skid plates off and make sure to get all the crossmember.

I had no problems doing it with cans. You could also buy a bulk gallon container to paint it on to easily accessible exterior portions of the frame. Might keep the overspray in check, and the extra can be used for touch up.

Avoid rubber like cv boots. It probably wont damage the rubber directly, but woolwax picks up grit, and you dont want that on rubber things that flex; just to avoid wearing down the rubber.

I think it’s good to get it dusty and gritty becase it turns the woolwax into a nice durable crust.
