Normal. These v6's are not quiet. They are noisier when cold. Just how they are.

    Normal.
Realize that if this is an annoyance you're going to have to put up with it for at least 300K+ miles or so.:)

Sounds great! Nice rhythmic old-school happy engine sound.

When it’s cold it makes more annoying sounds. Sometimes mine has a quiet (but noticeable whine that sounds like it comes from the alternator or power steering…those tend to be more annoying to me. But they’re not always audible.

These engines make a fair bit of “normal” sounds.

It's quiet as my wife's '21 T4R, I drive a 2004 Ram 2500 with a 5.9 CR so this is much quieter than mine lol.

It's not a clear tick/knock sound but a low frequent rhythmic tapping sound
I still can't identify its source

Maybe switch to another gas station like Shell. My 2022 runs smother when i switched.
May not be applicable in your case though.

When the engine is in park, the engine is effectively in neutral. When it’s in D, well, it’s in drive. Which means its engaged to the wheels. The drag from the torque converter will lower the rpm compared to “park”

Guess the noise is from drivetrain?
I can hear the rhythm increase/decrease and some clicks when I accelerate/de accelerate under 20MPH
I can always hear it either it's code start or warm up(light) once it's in D shift

The engine noise in the video sounds normal and familiar to my ear.

However, you may have other drivetrain noises, but I don’t think your video shows you driving.

Let’s start with the basics, is your transfer case in 4hi Unlocked?

    Can we hear a recoding?

Thanks a lot for your help
    It's a 2023 4Runner limited
    It's always on H4F
I'll record and upload video of "the rhythm increase/decrease and some clicks when I accelerate/de accelerate under 20MPH" soon

It seems to be the normal loping sound of a 4runner engine idling in drive, but louder than what I can hear it with my ear when I’m sitting in my 4runner in the drivers seat. It sounds like you captured that sound in the perfect spot. I’ve heard that loping rhythm the clearest when I’ve been working in the footwell area as my engine idled. Most of the sound in the video was capturing the engine idling/coasting or very lightly loaded. What does it sound like at steady state speeds (35-40mph) on the open road? I suspect you wouldnt be able to hear any loping at cruising rpm (1800 to 2000rpm)

I still say this is normal for a 4runner, perhaps it’s loud on the recording due to location of mic or being in a parking structure? Although the sound in the recording is loud (or at least distinct), the engine sound itself is exactly the rhythm of the 5th gen 4runner V6.

Besides this sound, does it have any functional problems? Was it purchased new? If so, don’t sweat it and enjoy your 4runner. Unless it grates on you and you have to idle a lot lol.

Thank you so much for your input
    It's brand new(manufactured in April 2023)
It's silk smooth when driving at 35~45mph@~1200rpm on local and 65mph@~1800rpm on highway with only delightful roaring sounds of V6 engine
Found a very good POV on 2023 TRD ORP with the familiar noise when stop at traffic light
    7:08 ~ 8:23
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4iAckwGV3E&t=81s
It is normal sound for 4Runner when stop in D shift

OP, do you still have this noise? I’m pretty sure I have a similar noise as you do with my 2022 TRD Off-road. I have the normal noise at idle but I also have a tapping noise when the engine is cold and I’m accelerating between 1500 and 2000 rpm. It lasts until the engine is warmed up and it sounds like valvetrain noise. It’s a higher pitched noise than the normal “diesel” sound the engine makes at idle and light acceleration. The best way I can describe it is if you imagine what a nail in your tire sounds like when going down the road but at a higher frequency and is RPM dependent. Here’s a video I recorded today.

I was kinda suprised too when I first picked up my new 23 ORP at the engine noise. In the early 2000's I had a new GM with a V6 and DOHC that sounded like the 4Runner. Came here, and discovered its normal. But it definitely transmits into the cabin area more than I would expect. Sounds like a modern diesel car engine almost.

Yes. I can still hear it when stop in D shift at traffic light
~5:00 similar engine sound when stop at red light
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfdEb-LpcLA
You can reference the engine sound at different rpm and speed

Any chance that it's the plastic engine cover in the driver's wheel well?
