Deer Strike

Tis the season for deer, friends, so keep your eyes open! I was Eagle-eyed this evening and still didn’t see this one coming!

Deformed the plastic bumper on one side, broke a fog light bracket, popped the bumper cover loose. I was able to get the bumper cover popped back into place and mostly back to normal shape.

The steel bumper from @victoryrunner absorbed the impact without even flinching. Little bit of Bambi left on the recovery point. 60mph impact means it likely isn’t walking away.

Hit Bambi so hard that hair was driven between the lens and frame of the light bar in addition to blasting it out of its mount.

 

I live in the area of PA where there is a lot of deer's, more of them in October. I use deer whistlers on the front bumper on my 2020 4runner. So far it has been working. Use the same ones on my other car for about 10+ years without hitting any deer's and other animal in the area. They hear me coming and run the other way. Good and cheap.

 

The data on them is pretty inconclusive, but…

1) they are cheap; and
2) they do not appear to actively cause harm

That being said, I would attribute your track record to the fact that you are concerned enough about deer strikes to engage in an effort to mitigate them. That would strongly correlate with being more attentive the potential for deer on the roadway.

Therefore, anyone who doesn’t want to hit deer should make sure you drive their vehicle!

I nailed one in our previous Corolla. 6 pointer. I dragged it to the side of the road. Went to the grocery store, came back to get it and someone already picked it up. People ride my ass on the side roads and I go 60mph. Sometimes.

 

how come airbag had not deployed at 60mph? is it becouse of a steel bumper?

Here in WI, they just drag ‘em to the side of the road where they rot.

I’m not talking about on the freeway only. This is even in city limits.

We're nearing that magic time of year between deer balloons and deer-cicles.

 

Food is cheap.

Seriously.

When you look at what food makes up in terms of household budgets, food has gotten massively cheaper over the decades.

It’s just we spend a ton of money on other things now, often things we don’t notice, but we seem to be good at remembering the price of food. Heck, it hurts when I pay $0.50 more for McDonalds.

There’s a lot wrong in our economy, but food prices aren’t the place we should be getting the most angry about - it’s the wages of the people who make the food.

There’s a weird catch-22 when it comes to wages for those who actually work to produce our food.

People say you can’t find anyone to work for the wages they want to/can afford to pay, and so we all look the other way as immigration and/or worker safety laws get violated. Then we complain about those laws getting violated, but the problem is that anyone who doesn’t violate them can’t compete because we’re not willing to pay more for food.

To be fair, I’m not accusing our favorite brands of breaking the law, but they certainly benefit from a supply chain where they can look the other way when it comes to the workers who show up on a repurposed school bus each day who work for someone that supplies contract labor.

My grandparents were farmers and they were poor. The folks who worked for other people in agriculture were poor…and the people who produce our food today are well below poor.

Impact wasn't severe enough. 60 mph against a wall would be a different story. Usually by the time the airbags detonate, the frame has crumpled at the crumple zones, and we'd be seeing another "is it totaled" thread instead of discussing road venison.

 

Speaking of cars, think back to the tire and wheel sizes everyone used to run.

Those tires are super cheap when you think about it. Heavier vehicles mean we need bigger brakes, which means we need bigger wheels…

Of course, I remember thinking how big my tires were when I was running 30.5” tires on my XJ back in the day. Now it’s like, “Sigh. Why can’t we just run 37s with ease?”

 

No. Stock crash bar is aluminum, which deforms more easily, absorbing impact energy. If anything the steel winch cradle (which is made of much thicker gauge steel than the frame) makes it more likely for the crumple zones to crumple.

 

As I understand it, the reason why the Ironman and ARB bumpers are airbag compliant is that they are actually less likely to set off airbags.

They are designed to dissipate more of the strike, which means the airbags are less likely to go off than other aftermarket bumpers - and certainly no more likely than OEM. So let’s call them OEM-equivalent.

That would mean in theory that his bumper should have transmitted more force through “the system” compared to OEM to the next point of failure, which would have then kicked off the airbags - unless he hit the deer the right way, and energy could be dissipated by the deer getting thrown, spun, or exploded just right, then that is energy not absorbed by the vehicle.

 

There are plenty of them killed during hunting seasons to keep the population down. I do not believe in high damage cost to my ride. I rather take my chances on something that costs $5 rather than spend $5000 or more for repairs. It is are fault that the wild life have little or no place to run because of land shortage. Hate me for wanting to spare the life of all animals.

From the description of the person in oncoming traffic who was sprayed with venison debris, I probably zippered it down its port side. It was hauling arse across the road and caught my recovery point along the way.

 

They could allow people to use A-10s to hunt deer from the air around here and we’d still have too many.

It’s not so much a land issue as it is a lack of predators.

Everywhere I’ve lived or visited where there is a danger of deer strikes has had a wonderful amount of open space…which is great for deer.

My only issue with the deer whistles is that collectively it might be a waste, and perhaps there are better solutions we need to be looking into.

But if anyone wants to buy them and mount them, it’s no skin off my back - I just wouldn’t want them to let their guard down.
