My 19 4Runner TRD Off Road DESTROYS headlights. Has anyone else experienced this?

I’ve had it since late 2019 and don’t specifically remember the problem being as prevalent early on but the past two years have been brutal. I’ve replaced 5 bulbs in 2023.

My shop has done thorough checks, confirmed proper bulbs/fuse/etc and can’t find any reason I would burn through them so fast. I haven’t brought it to a Toyota shop primarily because of convenience but it’s likely my next option.

Any experience with this problem or suggested fixes would be appreciated.

    True that halogens don't have a long lifespan. My neighbor was talking about switching to LED as he had changed his H11 halogen bulbs couple of times, but I don't think I've heard anything closer to the rate you have mentioned. But let me ask few questions even though I have nothing to help;

    1) Was good bulbs used? Like Phillips / Osram
    2) And they are regular power ones, not high power versions? (eg - Philips Xtreme Vision Pro)
    3) did the person install the bulbs make sure not to touch the glass part?
    4) was the dust cap installed properly? No cracks or leaks on the housing? So no moisture or dust in the housing?

Just few points to check. Have no idea how they burn in such a rapid pace.

These are all good checks. Especially the installation- you must make sure you use gloves (nitrile or otherwise). The oils from your hands on the glass can cause them to overheat, shortening their lifespan drastically.

I switched to HIDs, 4 years now and better performance and the bulbs last much longer. Replacement bulbs were $30

are they different than the lights in the SR5? I've had mine since 2019 and no issues.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
Just get the LasFit LED ones made for the 4Runner. They're not cheap, but I've been running them for over 3 years and they're great. Yeah, LED in a halogen housing, but this works somehow.

Interesting. In all the years I've owned Toyota's I can't remember ever having to change a halogen headlight bulb. My 2019 still has the original bulbs and I leave the automatic lights setting on all the time so headlights go on and off for tunnels, garages, etc. even during the day. I have about 34k miles.

Maybe it's the guy's shop. Maybe they're not using gloves when they're installing the bulbs. Maybe they're using cheapass bulbs.

Are you running a stiffer suspension?

I turn off my auto headlight on all vehicles since I have a garage.

I've always hated that it would turn on when I start my vehicle and turn off when I drive out. Just a habit like turning the AC off completely every time I turn the vehicle off.

I've had this same issue with my 2019 4Runner. We've swapped out the headlights (one at a time) probably 5-6 times. Is Sylvania considered a good brand? Any other brand recommendations would be appreciated.

New member. Long time reader. First time poster. I have the exact same issue. Mine is a 2018. All stock. It’s not oils etc. everything is done correctly. Is there an electrical issue perhaps? I have contemplated switching out the entire housings to new LED but $$$. Sorry revive an old thread but figured better than starting a new one.

    Welcome @RockyTRD and @JD4455

kmegg makes a few good points of reference for failures.

Also, check the wiring for any damage or loose connections. Bad or faulty grounds are halogen killers.

Some cheaper aftermarket headlights can cause issues as well.

Good thought on the grounding. I’ll check that. Thanks

Came here to say my wife’s 2018 4Runner headlights go out as well. I’m averaging switching them at every year. That is not normal, my 2003 Tacoma only had to replace one bulb but replaced both just in case.

I also found this thread searching why after installing the new bulb it still does not turn. Checked all fuses, connections. Might have to take it to the mechanic:(

Similar issue on 2016. Solved by dumping Sylvania and other aftermarket brands and sticking with OEM from the parts counter. Stiffer suspension also lessens lifespan.
