I've been using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20 for GM, Honda, Nissan and Toyotas in our Tacoma. Now have the 2023 4runner and I have only found the Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy Suitable for Hybrid Vehicles.
I ordered oil online, it was packaged as the Toyota formula I've been using. When package arrived it was the Hybrid oil formula.
Would anyone have experience with these two different formulas or are they the same, just different packaging from Mobil 1?
    Thank you.

After doing some internet checking I see one is DEXOS 1 and the other is DEXOS 2. I'm thinking now to just buy the Toyota oil at dealership. What are your thoughts? Thanks again!

There are buh-zillion oil threads on this forum.

The Dexos rating only applies to diesel engines. You can ignore it.

I promise that your 4Runner won’t be able to tell the difference between the “Advanced Fuel Economy” version that you bought and the “Extended Performance” version that you’re wondering whether you should have bought instead.

@Breeze whippersnapper02’s reaction, which I interpret as either frustration or fear regarding a post that occurs with mind numbing frequency and never fails to stir up a hornets nest, is not unexpected. Not only that, when you post a question that has been posted sooo often, and has an air of, how shall I say it, naïveté about it, it could easily be interpreted as a troll post.

On the chance that this isn’t a troll post, I will say this:
In your owners manual it says to use Toyota oil or equivalent. It describes the equivalent as Full-Synthetic, 0W-20, meeting the ILSAC GF-6a specification. That’s it. Look on the packaging of the oil you bought and see if it meets those three requirements. If it does then no more second guessing is required. Allow your oil-related insecurities to evaporate into the ether and live your life in a care-free and confident manner!

Thank you all! Not a troll. I did search but did not see answer to my question. I am concerned since it's brand new 4runner and this will be first oil change. I've checked over 5 Walmarts at least 5 times past two months looking for the mobil1 for Toyota, only to find the Hybrid formula. I see two different dexos ratings and not completely comfortable on what is best. I want to take care of this vehicle as it is expected to out live me with proper care and maintenance. I fully appreciate the expertise from members here willing to share.

Finally able to post pictures, figured it out today. Here's picture at dealership, 3 silver metallic 4runners came in same day. We chose the middle one with auto floorboards without 3rd row seating.

I feel sorry for brand new 4runner. TGMO available everywhere, Amazon and dealerships - why not use it?
what is the sickness to use inferior oils?

If your oil change is due and you can’t find the oil you prefer, try Toyota 0-20. It’s about the same price.

Thank you. I will be headed to dealership for the TGMO "had to google it" Monday morning. I had heard the Mobil 1 was what dealerships use when changing oil but if it's TGMO then I will go that direction. Thank you all for the responses!! I will not repeat the engine oil question again as long as my membership is in good standing. I have defiantly learned my lesson.

You’re good, at least your question was genuine. Unlike the recent oil threads whose questions could really only be answered by opinion. And the OP’s knew it would stir shit up. As long as your questions are not easily answered through the search function and not troll posts, most people here are more than willing to help if they can.

    Inferior oils?

TGMO is made by Exxon/Mobil for Toyota.

Any oil meeting the proper spec is fine.

If TGMO was on the shelf and the same price as the oil I usually buy, I'd get it. Otherwise, I'll stick with what's convenient and cheap

please compare additives package for every oil you use
additives package makes price of lubricant higher, or lower
the less you pay - the less you get

Brand of oil doesn't matter, I run whatever synthetic is on sale. Your vehicle won't know the difference.

If it's a brand new Runner, why not let the dealer do it? 2 years of maintenance are included.

In answer to your question: our Tacoma was serviced at dealership, they overfilled engine oil by 30oz. The new hire tech installed all 7 quart bottles. Service manager watched video in service department when I called after driving home and rechecking oil level. Once the vehicle returned to dealership the manager, master tech and myself were under the truck on lift. The oil filter was installed so tight the master tech was struggling to loosen it. Dealership did apologize and changed oil/filter and offered 3 more at no charge. I then declined the offer and have been changing myself. I don't mind DIY and actually feel much better knowing what is taking place rather than dropping off at dealership and being hopeful it's done correctly with correct weight oil. Since then I met a master tech working at another Toyota dealership, he told me stories that will really upset you. They all make mistakes but some are intentionally done.

Please substantiate that the additive package in Mobil1 is different than in TGMO.

Mobil 1 is the base for TGMO but Toyota adds quite a bit of Moly to it.

Whether you believe Moly is better for your motor or not long term is up to you. Most experts seem to agree that oils with Moly reduce friction compared to oils without.

It probably doesn't even need to be a consideration at short oil change intervals like 5,000 miles. Longer oil change intervals will make more of an impact.

I use Mobil 1 0-30 ESP. The vast majority of the nerds over at Bob is the Oil Guy claim that ESP is superior to the Advanced Fuel Economy version. Why? I'm not entirely sure because I'm not an oil chemist but the ESP has higher quality standards due to it's Euro certifications.

I’ve seen at least two instances on this board where the service department installed the wrong filter.

Where did you hear/read this please?
