Resale of modified 5th Gens

Just curious what kind of resale people are seeing on "modified" 5th gens.

Say your vehicle has 5 to 10K in modifications, (in the past) people struggle to get back half of their investment. Is this holding true for 5th gens?

It will really depend on the buyer and the modifications. If it can be removed, you're better off selling the accessories separately from the car.

 

I would pay more for an unmolested car than one that has aftermarket mods, despite how “legitimate” they may be.

 

To most the mods are worth zero and in several cases can actually cause the value to be less.

I always get a good laugh when I see people listing a used vehicle and they go into great detail on all the accessories they added acting like people are going to fight over it.

 

And this is why you do NOT add a 200lb ARB bumper...... Removing the winch to sell would cost almost 1K, because offroad shops can be crooks at times.....

Nice to confirm my thoughts are still accurate. There is now more incentive to drive the truck till it burns lol

 

Yep….. with your example I would be thinking how much is it going to cost me to replace the front end suspension because of that heavy bumper causing it to wear out

A low mileage, unmolested Cavalry Blue Pro would bring in $55k easily. If the right buyer comes along and really wants all of the extras, it will sell.

 

But it’s not unmolested. This is why I never understood people that get a pro and change what makes it a pro. It would make a better financial decision to get a TRD ORP.

 

I just sold my 21 tundra pro LunaRock and removed my SCS wheels and front light bar and audio system. Put it all back to stock. I have removed all my mods off of my Toyota’s before I sold them. And sold them separately. It’s always better. Just my opinion.

 

If I ever sell mine, it’s with the assumption that it would hold more value in stock configuration. I’m trying to keep all my mods reversible as long as I can do the work myself. If I sell and I’m not able to return to stock myself, then I’ll sell it for what I can get. These are popular enough that there’s a decent market for 4runners with some level mods. Enough that the mods shouldn’t completly hose the resale value compared to what a stock one could get, or at least not much less.
After all, people still pay close to new prices for 4runners with terminal rust.

Do you consider that to be reversible, or is that a “crossing the Rubicon” mod in your opinion? I mean, in theory one could get a new front bumper cover…

…but at what cost?

Of course, I’m asking this because on my “want” list is a winch bumper and high clearance cut.

 

This. When I look at used vehicles with mods, I wouldn't pay a dime over the cost of the same vehicle without mods.

This guy had a ton of mods on his vehicle and got offered mid-range blue book price for 2018 TRD Pro in excellent condition. That's how it goes for the vehicles with all the mods. Lol

 

Usually a bumper modification is going to be permanent. The biggest key is having a modification where you can reasonably disassemble the bumper and remove the winch.

Im glad the consensus here has helped me to see im better off sticking with the rig because the money invested will not return. Better to get enjoyment from the mods than try to sell a d build again on another rig.

 

I think most of the bumpers are only permanent to the level that you don't pick up a new bumper cover and get it painted to match. Generally seems like a bolt on operation with some plastic cutting.

I think most people overestimate the condition of their vehicle. Very unlikely to be "excellent" at 5 years old (and less likely if it's been off road).

 

Can you imagine how much money went into that?

Supercharger alone is over $7k before labor.

 

Living in Califfornia I see it so much with trucks for sale. Guys driving those jacked up super trucks with LED lights and every color matched aftermarket mod on the bottom. They go to sell and many never find buyers. Lol

 

Yeah, I kept the OE crashbar parts, so I can theoretically return to stock with a new bumper cover and paint if Im looking to sell. But only if I felt motivated to do the work myself. Paying labor to return it to stock probably wouldnt be worth it.

 

It all depends on the buyer. If sold privately the new owner might appreciate the mods. But the dealer wants it as stock as possible.

 

I had a good friend who dealt with car auctions and buying cars or trucks. He was good at what he did. But he told me along time ago do not mod a vehicle if you expect to get that back. Yes if you find the right buyer. He had a guy with a full size truck with 10,000 mods on it. And telling him what he put into it. He told him I don’t care how much you have in it. I will give you want the blue book is. Some mods are easy to remove and sell some are not. Most mods I have done were easy to remove and. Put it back to stock and still make out.

 

My 4R identifies as Stock+. Bilstein 5100's all around with Dobinson's springs (2.5/1.25), TRD PRO wheels, and 285/70/17 WildPeaks.

I don't think most would have any issues with those mods. But the plan is to keep this forever, so I'm not worried about it.

 

I suspect that's probably right - the parts would maybe make you whole on the labor.

Mods do not bring extra money. If anything, it might even decrease the value of the rig you are trying to sell.
Best case scenario, before selling swap back to OEM parts and offer the mods at a discount. Or sell the mods independently.
Experienced it with my Hayabusa. Had tons of mods on it. I was getting only marginally more than a bone stock Hayabusa. No where close to recovering the additional costs.
