I’ve been a susbciber to Viking Garage for a couple months. The gentleman is a Toyota certified mechanic and 4Runner owner. He does maintenance videos and does an incredible job just walking you through how to do maintenance on your 4Runner. Not only does he do that but will respond to posts/questions. Really a cool guy. If you are into maintaining your 4Runner check him out. You won’t be disappointed

His videos are mostly of just him talking to the camera about basic maintenance or easy modifications. Not very interesting content

He conned YouTube subscribers into buying him parts for his 4R so he could build the ultimate OEM spec. What a ridiculous concept. Guy tells you nothing you can’t get elsewhere and is all absolutely basic information. People pay for him to install stuff on his own vehicle. Hard to feel sorry for people who fall for that scam.

Sounds like a smart gig. How did he con his subscribers into buying him stuff?

By convincing them he’s doing something novel by adding parts to his car that are so basic it’s absurd. But hey, if people want to buy someone else a supercharger then go for it.

He does some good maintenance stuff. As far as people paying him to install parts on his 4runner, I guess I missed that part after watching quite a few of his videos. Doesn't bother me one bit.

It’s mind blowing to me how many people make money off you tube, let alone folks sending money to folks on YouTube to pay for mods, I guess it’s time to start OnlyTrucks.com subscription based service

Isn't that what youtube channels do? Just buy vehicles and do mods and we watch? Just like i Watch channels that sit there and play slots all day and get paid for it. Or other channels just talk about the newest phones and shit. Fuck, there's even channels that just drop shit from different places.

So it's really the whole platform. If you don't like the content, no one's forcing anyone to press play on the videos. Lmao. Shit i think the dumbest fucking thing are videos of people filming themselves watching other creators' videos. I just don't watch those.

    How is it a con?
He talks about 4runner stuff, shows things you can do to the 4runner. People are free to make their own opinion on what they would like to do.
I have seen a few videos of his, and I have not seen him saying " buy me a part if you want to see more content". Nor does he have a go fund me link somewhere, at least I haven't seen one. And even if there was, it was an offer to fund him, people are free to decline that offer.
By your definition, every buying and selling would be a prospective con.
If someone is a YouTube content creator, that's how one monetizes their skill, knowledge, experience or bullshit.

That's the reason for the existence of the platform. Most people are not starting channels just for fun.

I'm happy for anyone that can make a living without having to resort to a soul crushing 9-5 job.

I imagine it's difficult to maintain a steady stream of content that's both fresh and worthwhile. I watched a number of Viking's Garage videos that I considered worth the time spent, but I don't think he's on par with someone like the Car Care Nut for maintenance advice.

oh, I know. It’s just mind blowing to me as I was around preinternet. I remember in Highschool when we connected to the Library of Congress, insert modem noise for a couple of minutes. And I have no issue with it, other than being part of this massive addiction machine.

Oh yeah, I remember dial up when the internet was first becoming a thing in high school. Looks like you and I are equally ancient, haha.

Every once in a while I think about starting my own channel, but I'm too lazy and don't do anything interesting enough to generate good content.

I just laugh at myself when I see myself in video, and cannot stand the sound of my voice. Never mind I got nothing entertaining to share. I guess I could setup my camcorder while I play Mario on nes, then put that in my puter.

Car Care nut would be my go to but not sure how general maintenance videos are needed when it’s so easy.

Dial up was crazy - I could probably still make all the modem connection sounds from memory. Also tied up the phone line at the house so I'd always have to use it late at night. Was also too poor to pay for it - luckily there were a bazillion companies offering 30 days free trials with no credit card needed. I probably still have a couple of AOL, netgear, Hotmail, and other various accounts.

I also hate the sound of my recorded voice - sounds nothing like what I hear in my head.

As for this - it's youtube so it's free, right? Nobody is conning people out of their money - if they really like the content they can choose to donate to the creator to create more? Or am I cheating the youtube system for free by watching all these videos and not paying a dime?

Napster. The number one way to tie up the phone line.

And I thought it was only cheating when you skipped the ads.

Seriously! I remember sitting there for half an hour waiting for AOL to finally load, and now if Spotify doesn't immediately connect to my phone in my car. I lose my shit lol.

I don't have to skip the ads on YouTube, I'll admit I pay for the premium service with no ads. With the amount of channels I follow on YouTube, it's worth it for the 15 bucks a month. I originally did it because I was using YouTube to listen to podcasts, and with premium you can shut your phone screen off and it will continue to play.

    They definitely don't.
It's worse when they can't be bothered to take a second to google something. They would rather sign up for a forum and wait for someone to answer their post.
