I made the mistake of forgetting to close the hatch before pulling into my garage recently. Luckily, there's only damage to the plastic trim piece, and emblems attached to it right above the license plate. I already ordered the new pieces but am wondering if anyone has placed the new "4RUNNER" emblem on trim on this piece. I see there are dimples on it and I'm assuming the new emblems will line up with this somehow. Any ideas or experience with this?

It does appear there are corresponding tabs on the emblem based on a few pictures I've seen. Parts should be here tomorrow but I'm wondering how much these help with alignment. There may be some trial and error with this.

Dimples should help but you could also use a long straight edge to help with the alignment.

I've never replaced the rear letters, I expect there will be little tabs that will line right up. Can you take some pictures of the letters when they come in as well as the indents on the back hatch?
I would love to see for reference.

Yes, I will take some pictures of the parts and process. I found one video on YouTube where the emblem is installed towards the end. But, he does not give any information on how he determined the alignment but he does have a straight tape line at the bottom.

Painters tape will help getting a straight line, that's how I did the front letters.

Easiest way is with a second 4Runner parked side by side to take measurements / tape measure /ruler / painters tape. Dealer uses a template.

I do have the damaged one to use for measurements. It does seem that they may vary slightly based on other measurements I've found on here. From the bottom of the trim piece to the bottom of the letters it is 3/4". From "R" to the middle up the up arrow "Smart Entry" it is 1 3/16". I'll be measuring a couple more times before I commit to applying the emblem.

Hey Cotoyota - I just saw this thread and had started one yesterday that dealt with pretty much the same subject. I have to replace the plastic trim piece on our 22 Limited and the logo and lettering too. Somebody tried to steal ours and pried it loose and broke the clips that attach it to the lift gate. Really appreciate the video on how-to DIY the whole R&R. I'll be using that resource when the parts arrive.

Just a general question - it doesn't seem like a huge project, but the one thing that worries me a little bit is that plastic sheet that sits between the interior lift gate trim panel and the metal gate itself. Were you able to reuse that (ie was the adhesive still good after being pulled loose) or did you have to replace that too?

    Thanks,
    Brad

I have seen several emblems that use the plastic backer (that keeps all of the letters separated) on the emblems as a sort of template when laid out flat. May be something to check before installing.

The plastic vapor barrier is reusable. I gently pulled it back and used a razor blade to cut the butyl tape as I separated it. I only needed to pull back the top third (closest to the window) to access the bolts and removed the plastic plug to access the last one. Use some painters tape to keep the plastic piece out of the way so you don't get the sticky stuff all over yourself. Once I replaced the trim piece and fastened everything, I positioned the plastic barrier and firmly pressed down on the edges and it stuck with no problem and couldn't even tell it was removed.

The emblem comes attached to a plastic sheet with everything already spaced. I measured the old letter placement several times and laid out some blue painters tape to give me a straight edge to align the letters to the trim piece. You can peel off the backing in two steps which helps a lot. My recommendation is to measure from the bottom of the trim piece to the bottom of the letters, take into account approximately 1/16" if you have the black overlays. Then measure from the top of the "R" to the middle of the top smart entry arrow or the bottom to get your horizonal alignment.

Excellent - that's what I was hoping you'd say. Getting a new vapor barrier into the exact right spot would have to be pretty challenging. Thanks for the response.

Always have the option of some clear gorilla tape on any oops you may have.

I'm a little late to this conversation, but I need the part number for the small plastic clip that sits BEHIND the Toyota emblem. It's held in by a small screw. I managed to crack mine when replacing the garnish. Here's a screenshot from a YT video of what I'm talking about:

If anyone knows the part number, I'd be grateful!

I just broke this clip too. I hope the dealer has it in stock.
