    Hey all,

Has anyone installed an aftermarket moonroof in their TRD Off-road Premium? If so, what has your experience been like?

Don't do it. All aftermarket moonroofs leak and cause rust issues in the future.

I will never have a moonroof / sunroof ever again. One more hole in the body to plug.

Ugggg. Never ever had a good experience with aftermarket sunroofs. Even the best of the best. OEM or nothing for me from now on.

I'm in the camp among those who like moonroofs but I would never have one installed aftermarket.

I'd give you my OEM one, but then I'd get rained on...and probably sunburnt.

This. Even factory moonroofs leak, though typically not at the seals but at the drain hoses.

I specifically ordered my TRD ORP without one. Never used them in previous vehicles and had some bad experiences with them. Don't miss not having one and I never have to worry about it leaking or something going wrong.

Plus I have a Jeep TJ for the days I want the "open air" experience.

I don't even want the factory one. My leak already fixed under warranty. Who knows when I will get a leak again.

I'm surprised by the number of folks who don't want a moonroof on a 4Runner. For me, one of the most amazing experiences is driving with the moonroof open and the back window rolled down to experience that natural wind tunnel effect.

I have one on my 22 ORP and I like it. I would only have one if it were a factory option.

Take it from someone that has worked in the automotive service industry for over 30 years, ALL aftermarket sunroofs/moonroofs will have problems at some point and it will be a PITA to get it worked on.

I've had both on different vehicles. I love my 4R moonroof, i use the tilt function every single day here in TX. So much easier and makes me feel safer than rolling down the windows.

Fully open maybe once a month in the "winter" months. It creates a nice air flow with the back window down and the side windows up.

I will agree with the others.........nothing but problems when I've had aftermarket roof. Leaking and cracking abound!

Yep. When I first was thinking about, and then got a 4Runner - I didn't totally understand the hype about the rear window going down. First time I opened the moonroof and lowered the rear window - I got it.

Trust me, leave it alone. I have one and never use it plus it takes away headroom.

As much as we enjoy our moonroof - and we use it all the time - I would never have an aftermarket moonroof put into a vehicle. No way. We've had factory moonroofs in a few of our vehicles - never any problems. The first was in a 2006 Honda Odyssey. My wife drove that van for almost 10 years - used the moonroof all the time - and we never had an issue with it. She replaced the Odyssey with a 2015 CR-V - also with a moonroof - and no problems in 8 yrs/70K+ miles so far. I think factory moonroofs, from higher quality manufacturers, are pretty safe - but it is one more thing that can go wrong.

I have owned a car with an aftermarket moon roof. (Purchased that way.) it never leaked. It had a tilt function that I used often. But it didn’t slide, and opening it meant removing the glass and storing it in the back. I did it a few times but it was so inconvenient that removing it was a rare occurrence. The other issue was the lack of a sunshade. I had the glass tinted a couple of times to try to mitigate the unwanted heat, which didn’t help much. Ultimately I made my own sunshade with a few layers of foamcore board and some fabric which fit tightly within the opening. Once I installed it, it never came out.

I love having a moonroof and would not buy a vehicle without one, but I would never put in an aftermarket one  In the summer I keep the sunshade closed most of the way and tilt the moonroof open while parking to let heat escape, in the winter I like to drive around with the sunshade wide open for extra sunshine. We've had moonroofs in an Infiniti QX4, a Honda Accord Hybrid, and a 4Runner and never had a single issue with any of them :)

Got the one that came with my 2018 4Runner and never used it. Don't even know if it works. Never used the one in my 2011 either.

My vehicles with Sun/Moonroof leaked eventually. Moldy smell last years of ownership.
Several new cars with roofing problems at local car Upholstery shops.
They had to remove roof liners to locate leaks. Not a pleasant scenario.

Yep. Ordered my '20 with a sunroof because my 4th gen had one. I opened it once the day I bought it to make sure it worked - and have never opened it again.

I am in the camp that loves the sunroof. Roof open and rear window or all windows down makes me not miss my previous wrangler. The rear window down makes all the difference in wind buffeting which was a drag with the hardtop jeep. I am 6’5” and have plenty of headroom. I don’t get the complaints about that unless you are substantially taller than me. My wife opens it about every time she drives it. Aftermarket is a no no for reasons already posted. I wouldn't buy one without it.

If I knew then what I know now...

I noticed a moldy smell. Then I found sopping wet carpet on the driver's side floor. Three mechanics and body shops couldn't fix it. (I don't think they tried too hard...)

Finally, thinking it might be a leaking windshield seal I had a glass guy look at it.

The windshield wasn't leaking. He found the moonroof drain plugged. That was the factory moonroof.

You'd be crazy to install a moon roof.

This is why I sought one out with a moonroof as well. Love it open with back window down.

Maybe it becomes a problem in the future? I will be sure to clean the drain lines out occasionally. Same way KDSS is a liability if you don't clean out the actuators

Edit for spelling. And also to say I'd never add an aftermarket moonroof

My vehicles are in garage and I'm working from home since covid. So pretty much my 2021 that leaked the moonroof was in garage.

Before covid my daily driven 2018 4runner was parked in garage unless I went to work late and garage is full.

Per the repair document looks like my moonroof alignment was adjusted as a fix. Hopefully it won't leak again. Since I change my work place now the 2021 would face outside parking a couple of days a week. But zero trees to drop leaves and dirt to get drains clogged. (Hopefully)

I have mine set to open with the windows when holding the unlock button on the key fob which helps to cool the truck off if its been sitting outside in the sun. Other then that, wish I had a flat roof. It rattles when in the vent position and I think increases cabin noise in general when the shade is not closed.

On the other hand, my wife uses the sunroof in her Tacoma everyday and every time she drives the 4Runner. I will say the Tacoma roof does not rattle at all in the vent position.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
We waited for a ORP with the colors/options we wanted w/o a moonroof for over 6 months….finally gave up and took one with a moonroof.
