So, I went on a trip to southern California a couple of days ago. It was very hot down there (107 degrees). I drove my brand new (1300 miles on the odometer) 5th generation Toyota 4Runner Off Road Premium. About 150 miles into this trip, my A/C system shut down on me! I had it set to "max" and the fan set to the halfway point. I pulled over to check the fuses (they all appeared to be okay) and I noticed that the air blend doors where closed and the outside vent would not open. Also, the fan quit working. The system appeared to be in "defrost" mode. I also noticed a puddle of water under my car, from the condenser possibly thawing out. I ended up driving the rest of the way (around another 600 miles) in a very warm vehicle! The next morning, I tried the A/C system again, and it worked fine, for about 1 hour, when it shut down again. I parked it and visited with a friend for a couple of hours, and when I came back, I turn the system from "max" to "on" setting and ran the system for several hours (10 hours, in fact), and it ran fine.
So, my question is, has anyone else ran into this issue, and if so, how did you fix it?

I’ve heard of poor ac performance in really high temps but not shutting down. I would take it to the dealership it’s brand new and under warranty.

So something similar happened to me on the Taco a few weeks ago. Here is the story:
I went to get window tint and the shop got the windshield so wet that water got inside the front end of the dash area and there is sensor clip there that is basically the thermostat that shows the temp on the main dashboard, well the temp there was -27F when the outside was 102F and the AC was not working at all like you described. I ended up taking it to the dealer and they replace the clip and little temp sensor and I was back again with AC. The dealer charged me 280 for this and the tint shop reimbursed me for it.

I have a '23 ORP and live in SoCal and have been driving quite a bit during the days the last couple weeks. AC pumping ice cold air the whole time. I have not experienced what you did.

    Warranty time.

If the dash displayed OAT is indicating -27F then that’s your first clue. AC compressor on modern cars won’t kick on if it senses a very low outside air temperature.

The heat index here is over 100 every single day for months on end and my AC works tirelessly and has never failed me.

The puddle under your car is perfectly normal when using AC.

Let us know what the dealer says.

I find the A/C performance to be very weak in 100+ Texas weather. My Camry will freeze you out.
