Rusted OEM parts on 2019 4Runner or replacement parts?

    OEM Rusty Parts?
    Vehicle:
    2019 4Runner
I just recently had a small back fender plastic rip due to tire blow out.
Body shop had my 2019 4Runner for over 20 days and I noticed my remote on key had a white sticker over what I now found out would cover my FCC ID #. Red flag then the grill in front I never saw rust before peered caught my eye. I tried to open my car with second backup remote key with FCC ID and the car doors would not open.
My car has generic remote with my key. My gut says look under the SUV
Go to a garage lifted up and was shocked at pictures attached. Can someone confirm these rusted parts have been exchanged out for generic or flooded parts from a different vehicle?
I see caps or bolts which have no rust
Not sure if these parts labeled are OEM?
I confronted the insurance company and the body shop.
Need backup advice to confirm these parts are not from my 2019 4Runner?

All advice and feedback will help me to figure out what I must do next.

4Runners tend to rust pretty easily. Judging by your name, I'm thinking you spend a lot of time at the beach? Salt air, and especially salt water, is not good for steel.

I don't know about the keys, but I highly doubt that anyone would have switched out any of those parts while you' 4Runner was at the shop.

Hi @BeachgirlTX and welcome to the forum. Can you flesh out the issue with the keys? Do you have aftermarket remote key fobs? And after you got your car back the key had a sticker on it, and the spare key didnt work? Maybe connect the dots a little bit.

As for the rust, go through the shop invoice in detail and confirm that parts they say they replaced are rusty. Also look under the rest of the car and see what the “ambient” amount of rust is, and whether the new parts are particularly rusty.

That all looks factory and it looks like the vehicle has spent some time in a salty environment.

Judging by how dirty the wheel barrels are it would be a good idea to occasionally clean your car, including the underside.

A lot of questions arise - where do you live? Did you buy new or used? If used, do you know where it was before you bought it? Any maintenance records? Is this the first time inspecting underneath the vehicle? Without more information, it's hard to form an opinion.

    Hey welcome here! @BeachgirlTX
When it comes to the rust, which there's quite a lot of, it's somewhat never too late to start restoring and rust proofing. I wish got at it earlier under my 2016, living in British Columbia near ocean. Highly recommend you start looking under there more often, rinse and wash, and invest in rust proofing as soon as you can afford anything at all.
    Good luck !

It’s a curse or something. It’s not 100% of the time, but there have been so many times that I’ve responded to a first time poster with a problem, and then they vaporize, never to be seen again. My online aura must be uniquely repellant to new posters.

It must have been a terrible disappointment to see that much degradation in such a young vehicle. I figure it was too painful to engage further on the topic.

This post is a little confusing and hard to follow.

It sounds like you had a tire blow out and cause damage? You said it damaged a small back fender? How small? Was it just a mudflap, or was there extensive body damage from the blown tire?

You have pictures of most of your undercarriage? Where was the repair work done? What did they tell you was replaced or repaired? Got any pictures of those areas specifically?

As to the rest of the undercarriage, it looks like a typical 4runner that gets exposed to salt and doesn’t get rinsed off very frequently.

Honestly though, the rust does NOT look that bad. All she needs to do is make sure it gets rinsed off really well, then coat the frame with woolwax or fluid film. I’d spray some of the thinner fluid film first on all areas that have deeper rust, and the insides of the frame rails and crossmembers. That will make sure it penetrates the rust well. Then coat the entire frame with wool wax.

The owner should understand that a woolwax coating looks ugly after it gets run through dusty, or muddy conditions. But that’s the price to pay to keep the 4runner from getting structural rust that will make it worthless in 10-15 years.

Yes. She’s posted pictures of both the front and rear axles and it all looks pretty uniform regarding the degree of corrosion.

I agree. It looks early enough to prevent lasting consequences if dealt with in a timely manner.

She needs a second pair of experienced eyes on the ground.
If this vehicle had this much rust before the service. She would have noticed. The T4R sets high up the ground.

    Seems those stickers were taped.

Wouldn't want a keep a vehicle like this

a lot of what is pictured isn't easily seen unless you start crawling under there which i doubt is the norm for this person.

look at the photo of the frame where the LCAs are bolted. the rust on the frame matches rust everywhere else. are we saying a full body/frame swap was done to this truck?

I agree that OP is shocked, not only to find the rust under there upon looking at it for the first time, but also that everyone is pretty much saying she owns that rust, no one swapped an entire suspension and drivetrain onto her 4R while fixing the plastic panel. Too painful to respond, apparently.

My 4Runner bought new one time owner
Both sets of keys came with FCC ID numbers
Upon return of my vehicle the remote with my car key has been changed to a remote without the FCC ID # this caused me to question the rust peering behind the front grill
I had never noticed before 2nd red flag.

my backup OEM remote does not work on opening the suv.
The shop neglected telling about me about the new remote and reprogramming my locks.
Why would they steal my FCC ID remote?

when I confronted them they asked me to bring my second key into shop as they said they did not swap out my remote.
I live close to the beach but I take care of my 4R.
Then there’s the front frame rust not there before.

they probably lost your key and purged all the remote and immobilizer codes.

what rust prevention measures have you taken on your 4R? do you have record of the undercarriage not having rust before you took it to the body shop?

The remote was a red flag as was the rust appearing out of nowhere behind my front grill from the frame.

After placing the suv on the rack and viewing parts that are rusty. Why are their new bolts holding some of the undercarriage rusty parts in place?
It may seem like a lot of work to swap out a total body frame but in Texas, there are thieves that walk away with excavators and catalytic converters in minutes.
Some thieves can work after hours and over twenty days in the shop for a small tear on backside of my passenger plastic fender, may have been ample time to get the switch or parts or total body frame replaced.
My 4 Runner looks like a 4Runner used with a boat. I don't own boat but I do believe I need a professional set of eyes to make a determination on my 4 Runner’s undercarriage as it’s only 4 years old.
I have yet to check the Engine block to see if my numbers match up to my owners manual.
A professional legal inspector of auto should be able to make a positive confirmation either way.
If it’s my rust I’ll treat it
but my gut and eyes and knowing my vehicle plus the remote being the first red flag, tells me to get a legal inspector to file a claim with an attorney if I am right.

Sorry Captain on just now replying back to all on forum. Just got out of the cloud of three day flu. I appreciate everyone’s feedback
Was out due to flu and will take everyone
Opinions with a second pair of professional eyes to inspect my 4Runner to include all under my hood engine included.
Need to make sure my numbers matchup to my manual. Thieves in TX go beyond what seems like a norm plus new bolts on old rusted parts not making sense.
