I have had great experience with Pennzoil, especially with their top of the line Ultra Platinum in my Chrysler/Jeep vehicles. What do you guys use in your 4Runners?

I don't have a favorite, whatever happens to be on roll back at Walmart. I've used Penzoil Platinum, Valvoline, and Mobil one.

    Oh another oil thread…

Any off the shelf oil of the correct viscosity works just fine.

It’s not just a Toyota thing. An engine just wants the correct viscosity with regular changes. It doesn’t see brand.

Dealer said Toyota oil has some additives. Don't want to take any chances with my amazing truck and want to use the best oil lol. I am loving this truck.

Me too, Toyota oil doesn’t cost anymore than other brands so why not?

I have a '14 Outback that was using about a quart of oil between changes. I did a little research and found Pennzoil Platinum had lower/better NOACK (oil volatility) numbers than most other common oils found at Walmart, so I switched, and oil consumption went down quite a bit. Now I just use it in all of my vehicles.

On another note, has anyone who uses PP found that it seems to be scarce at Walmart recently? I went to two Walmarts a week apart that are 50 miles from each other, and the shelves had been wiped clean of Pennzoil Platinum.

Was using Castrol Extended performance until I couldn't find it anymore. Now I use Valvoline Extended performance. That's my story and sticking to it.

Not a fan of Pennzoil. Had an old car that didn't like it and never used again.

That said it really shouldn't matter much if its synthetic.

My go to is Toyota Oil, Mobil 1 and Quaker state. I avoid the rest, not that it matters much.

Toyota Oil tests very well. That's why I use it.

Whatever major brand when they have a sale. Ran Mobil 1 for three years because they were repeatedly on sale. Switched to Pennzoil PurePlus last year because they were on sale. I recently bought 4 jugs of local store brand 0W30 because their MSDS sheet shows they were made by Shell and therefore readily mixes with Pennzoil. I run 0W30 to have a common oil across three vehicles and a lawn mower in the family.

If you make purchasing decisions on politics and historical grievances, you may want to avoid Mobil (Exxon Valdez) and Castrol (Deepwater Horizon). I'm sure Shell has overthrown a few Third World governments as well.

Can you elaborate on what your old car didn't like about it?

Granted it was a early 80's Buick driving in the 90's. But at the time I usually used Quaker state and the car literally felt like it lost power after doing an oil change with Pennzoil. Went back to Quaker state and the power was restored. Very odd.

    Tinted fronts, blacked out overlays.
The service guy at Longo Toyota said the oil they use is Pennzoil Synthetic. I didn’t ask him if it was rebranded “Toyota Oil” but that’s what he said they use.

This site wouldn't exist if it weren't for:

"Will 285's fit on TRD rims?"

    "What oil do you use?"

"How do I hookup Raptor lights?"

"Which fuse do I use for X?"

Maybe it will turn into something like printers and their toner cartridges were they place a small board on the filter so the ECU can verify that it's OEM and someone will develop a brand sensor to see what you put in the vehicle. Reduced performance for not using OEM. :bananadance::bananadead:

Edit: Another idea would be a individual code for an oil kit.

Don't laugh - my POS new G.E. fridge *requires* their rip-off $50 water filters. If you attempt to use a generic off Amazon, it won't work - there's an RFID chip in the label that will not register and now you can't get any water or ice. No BS.

This is from my experience as a Dealership tech. When at Infiniti for over 15 years, we used bulk Kendall for all engine oil changes. We did not use any Nissan branded oil. Same for gear oil. The oil tank was around 250 gallons and we had gallon pour jugs that we would fill at the tank when needing to replace after a change.

We used Nissan/Infiniti branded fluid for all transmission services.

Well crap because I just purchased a GE Profile myself because the Samsung died in less than 5 years, was fixed under warranty and died again in less than a year. I guess I'm ordering GE filters.

Yep - and I've determined it's NOT based on water usage. When the kids were here and we used it a lot, the light came on at 5 months and quit dispensing water at 6 months. They've left, and the fridge does the same thing - turns on a 5 months. Total bullshit.
