Just got my 2023 4Runner - the revs sound high over 60, like it wants to change up - I'm driving in S4 - is that just the way it sounds?

What rpm are you at? Gear hunting from OD 5 to 4 gears is a common complaint.

You're driving in S4 and wondering why the RPMs are higher? I'm confused.

S4 limits you to 4th gear. 5th gear is overdrive. Either use overdrive, or bump it up to S5

I only use manual 2 scenarios. Dropping into 4 because of a hill and know it's going to gear hunt dropping into 4 anyway. Or off road and I want to hold in 1 or 2 using some engine braking holding the gear and speed.

My gal is big! S4 when going up hill is a must. Also, I depend on “Sequential Mode” off road. I don’t have Crawl Control.

Unless you're towing or climbing hills, you probably don't want to skip out on the overdrive gears at highway speeds. That's definitely going to result in high RPMs and poor(er) fuel economy. Fifth and sixth gears are both OD gears for use on the highway.

To be fair, I have no idea how many posts it takes for that to go away. :p

I did already. But, on Tacomaworld it changes to "well known member" after a number of posts. Here, I don't think it does, hence the "new member? Really??"

Just because I talk a lot doesn't mean I know anything, lol! But, I have learned a lot here over the last couple of years, usually after being stubborn and wrong and then being proven wrong and then finally admitting that I was wrong. :anonymous:

Also, there are some people on Tacoma world with well over 100,000 posts.

The question is, if you're in S4, how much "over 60" are we talking about...?

For reference, I don't really use S5 or D at all when I have my "summer" tires on, so I'm cruising at around 3000 RPM's at 75-80 MPH. It's definitely harsh on the fuel economy, so I typically drive slower when I'm not in a hurry.
