"gas generator" over C pillar?....a 'what is this' post

there's a structure marked 'gas generator" up above the c pillar with what looks like piping(?) forward and aft...what the heck is this?

 

Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with the airbags.

 

My read on the diagram is that they’re attached to airbags, according to the light blue blobs in the legend (blue blob is oblong along the roof line in the diagram). Looks like the side curtain airbags.

That makes sense.

Similar to the cartridges in the overhead of the airliners where the passenger oxygen mask is stowed. The gas generator pictured in the link is much bigger due to the size of the airbag.

 

The document title is “Emergency Response Quick Reference”. Probably to comply with some requirement to identify the dangerous or explosive parts of the vehicle, for first responders or auto dismantlers.
