I highly recommend against top plates unless you're meticulous about maintenance. They create a place for mud, dirt, salt, etc to collect out of sight. Mine were rusted underneath substantially.

RSG with top plate. I really like them and use as step for roof rack but agree on potential for rust depending on your location.

I went with the CBI sliders without kick outs, these sliders have a lot of mounting holes. I had the sliders with the kick outs on my FJ. Did not like them because my wife and I keep knocking into them with our legs. Also it was a tight squeeze between cars when parking. CBI slider.jpg (kick out section).

I have a question. why do so many rocksliders for 4Runners have that kick out? Seems to me the only thing it accomplishes is creating a hang up.

    Taken from RSG site:

    Kickout or No-Kickout

The next choice you will have to make is deciding if you would like a rear kick-out on the back of the slider or not. The kickout sliders are designed to push the rear of the vehicle off trees or around rocks and be used as a pivot point. The additional kickout does allow for a nice step when accessing gear or a tent on your roof. The kickout option is usually the most popular as it offers a bit more protection than the no kickout. The no kickout option is a much sleeker design offering the same strength but is more low profile.

    1) as the name suggest it kickout your back tire away from the rock so you don't hit the rear.
    2) it is an excellent step for kids and dogs to get in and out.

i know that's what they say. but, in my experience offroading, i want to slide straight into the tire tread and ride that rubber up the rock. just skeptical how well that kickout actually accomplishes a pivot versus just creating a hang up.

This shouldn’t be a tough decision. Assuming that each performs its task adequately, aside from that the differences are significant. The CBI version with the bump out has a distinctive construction, and the slotted top plates are unusual too.

The RSG design is more conventional, but look at all the iterations they offer!
Both companies let you choose DOM or HREW tubing, powder coated or bare, and with or without kick out. RSG goes on to offer flat or angled, with or without top plate, and top plate flat-side-up or grip-side-up.

RSG - flat, no kick out, with top plate, flat side up.

I have the RSG with grip top plate, no kickout, and have no problem using the entire length of the slider to access the roof.
