Hello, here to ask a pretty simple question that I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere else and I'm a little confused/worried

So I am rebuilding the engine (3VZE yeah I know should have just swapped to 5VZE but anyhoo) in my 1994 4Runner and I have got to the point where the engine is mounted, I have begun connecting some electrical components back up and up until now I have been leaving the battery disconnected except when I go to put the rear window down so I can open the tailgate to get parts and such out. But yesterday when I went to clean up for the night and put everything back in the back of the 4Runner, I went to connect the battery to put the window up and fuel starting squirting out of the still disconnected fuel line coming from the tank into the fuel rails. I immediately disconnected the battery and took it out not to cause any unwanted sparks while there is fuel vapor in my engine bay, and I had to leave the window down for the night. I can keep going putting everything together and even attach the fuel line to the fuel rails so it doesnt squirt everywhere, but I'm mainly concerned that the fuel pump is turning on just with the battery connected... Is this supposed to happen to keep the system pressurized and will shut off once it gets there? I cant imagine that it is supposed to just be on all the time, and no the key was not in the ignition nor was it set to the "run" position.

If anyone has any ideas or knows how the fuel pump is supposed to act please let me know. I will be going in and disconnecting the fuel pump relay so that I can keep trucking along without fears of fuel getting everywhere.

    Thanks,

    -RR

The fuel pump should only turn on if the ignition is turned to run. Here's the wiring diagram.

    Best of luck.
