I didn't realize how deep it was until after the crossing was over and saw the video. That was day 1 of 3 days Off-roading. No Water intrusion into the cabin. NO Wet floor mats or wet floors. No dashboard light ups and I've driven about 500 miles on road on the way home and in the 4 days since. I'd recommend doing the Rear Diff Breather relocate into the gas fill. (I should have done it too, and will be doing it soon.)

In a more extreme crossing that we didn't video, I hit a huge underwater rock, I had to back up and try again because I was caught on the exhaust. When I got out of the water it sounded like I'd actually torn the exhaust. After 30 minutes it went back to sounding normal. One of the guys wheeling with me owns an exhaust shop, and when we were done we confirmed it was dented but not ruined. No replacement needed.
The "burble" I'd added was most likely from reversing in the water and somehow caused water to get into the exhaust which exited or evaporated after 30 minutes. THAT noise was the scariest part of the ride.

I was a little disappointed to find out altimeters that rely on atmospheric pressure have to be constantly reset when you know your actual altitude (guess I need gps as well). Would have known if I paid more attention in science class I guess. To use it to predict the weather you actually spin the dial to the weather section and watch to see if the needle moves (you have to note your current altitude first so you can set it back because you're changing the dial location). If you know your actual altitude (or just remember what it was reading) you don't need to spin the dial - if you notice your altitude increased but you haven't changed elevation, weather is worsening. If it drops, weather is clearing. The rapid changes in pressure are why you have to correct the altitude with known altitude.

Overall I like it though - the altimeter and barometric pressure gauge pop out of the case so you can take it with you. It's mounted with two strips of velcro on the base. I will see how they hold up.

Unlike a lot of things I've bought on Amazon, this feels well made. It's made in Japan just like the 4runner!

 

Installed an RCI Skid Plate. No more removal every time I change my oil!! (oh, and it's a LOT more protective than stock). Looks great, not a bad price ($450 for the Black Powder Coated Aluminum) for a super-high quality and sturdy skid plate that replaces two different stock skid plates. Only negative was that I had to wait 6 weeks for it to arrive.

Also, big "plus sign" for RCI's customer service. My skid plate arrived with the hardware bag open and one of the bolts was missing. I called and they immediately sent a new one, but also told me the exact size, thread pitch, and length to grab from the local hardware store so I could get it installed today.

If anyone in the local DC/MD/VA area is interested in a stock TRD Pro front skid plate for a very reasonable price, let me know. Nothing wrong with it, just too large and heavy to ship - but if you are within driving distance we can work out a deal.

 

Are you planning on getting the filler plate ? I am really happy with the RCI skids.

Agree on the rear diff relocate. I would change out the rear diff fluid to be safe.

 

Details on the screen? Is that just a background image, or are you playing a star wars movie through the oem head unit?

 

i have a filler plate on mine. careful on water crossings. it forced water up through my front valance and tore it off!

Not a movie, just my off screen. Luckily these don't get screen burn because this pic is up 99% of the time. I have another stormtrooper pic for the startup splash screen. This works on the older head units, not sure about the 2020+ newer ones.

Most GPS units (NOT the in-dash ones though) have elevation as one of the fields they can display. If you have what Garmin considers as a "hiking" GPS you have to make sure to set it to "GPS Elevation" so it will give the elevation of location as per the map. Otherwise, as the Stormtrooper said, you'll have to keep adjusting according to the barometric pressure. Map elevation is good enough for most.

 

Redoing my fine touches for my 2-day old ORP...

Secondary air pump pre-filter. A Briggs & Stratton filter media material, I think.

My black rubber OEM hitch cover that I'm dorking out in white and silver... I was too eager to see the work... A thick amount of paint ran a bit. I'll ignore my perfectionist desires.

Dash cam and underseat lighting are on the list, but I'm going to wait for a day I'm feeling adventurous to start that.



I will add oil-infused felt battery post corrosion washers tomorrow. ($1 on Amazon)

 

Got some new shoes and sized up to 28 75 R17. I went with new Toyo Open Country RT Trail in Load E. I'll plan to write a full review once I've drive them for a bit. I do not find them overly stiff but I 'm running the Elka 2.5 DC suspension so that may help. I may still play with that to adjust the ride a bit.

I literally sent it on self tappers into the old screw shafts lmao

 

Almost forgot... I put a light sensor into my ORP dash. I broke the housing when I removed it from my 2020 OR, so duct tape is holding it together...

 

Another one of my Amazon mods, Alla Lighting T15/921 backup lights.

I should have done a before and after picture, although automatic adjustments on the camera would have minimized differences.

These lights illuminate at least twice the distance on our backup cams compared to the OEM.

I confirmed some gut feelings when I saw my car being backed out of the tire shop. The backup lights were like lasers in the middle of the day. Definitely attention grabbers and that's what I want.

 

This is awesome. If on pavement comfort is good I might be tempted to go ELKA again and might try 34x10.5R17 Load D. ( 10.5 is fraction over 266mm , so won't look bad as 255 to my taste).

 

Well it looks like a 23 TRDOR Premium might be in my future real soon

 

With all of the electronics on it, the vehicle service agreement might be a good deal. The 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty, using a credit card to purchase it, was running about $1,400 with Jerry at Midwest Toyota. So for a little more than $10 a month, a single optical system reset and calibration will have made the entire VSA worth it.

I might just have to get that. I was waiting to see how much I like the quality and I'm very impressed, I might go for the full-up skid all the way back.

 

VSA has been discussed with the dealer and it looks like I can get a 10/125 or $1295

 

Replaced factory radio with an Alpine iLX-F509 9" floating display. I think this is just about the perfect size for the TFR as it does not block heater/ac vents. Screen resolution is very nice and has all the bells and whistles. Mainly did this for upgrade to the audio, and it sounds much better with the upgraded speakers I had installed a few months ago. This was a package from Trail Grid Pro. They take care of all the prep to make install quite simple.

 

If the guy is willing to sell it to you for that price, what's his name and dealership? These guys can sell a new car warranty to anybody. As long as it's bought as a new car, under 3 years/36,000 miles.

I would never have considered a vehicle service agreement until my recent experiences replacing a windshield for a 2020 OR. Southern California dealerships all wanted $2,200 and up. Not because of the glass, because of the optics system.

 

Do these aftermarket headunits allow vehicle controls as well? Eg- DRL function, headlight sensitivity, door lock settings, etc?
