Greetings from the great white North. We just got an Apartment in Fairbanks, AK so I am looking to purchase a more tactical vehicle than my Subaru Outback. I want a TRD Off-Road Premium with KDSS and want an upgraded roof rack. Would you recommend the 4Runner Pro roof rack or Go Rhino from the dealer or would you recommend an aftermarket basket type such as Front Runner?

Rack - for bolting shit to

Basket - for tossing shit in

Need to clarify intended use prior to recommendations being disseminated

Welcome. I too considered outback before purchasing 4Runner.
So you have the vehicle yet. Do you know if it would arrive soonish. Depending on part of the country these vehicles are difficult to get, and involve wait. I’d first get the vehicle and then start thinking about upgrading roof rack.

Greetings from the Mitten. You should probably wait to see if the OEM rack suits your needs before making any changes. One thing you will need to consider changing on whatever 4Runner you get are the tires. All trim level stock tires are pretty worthless except for warm weather dry highway travel.

Welcome from San Diego! I too have been looking at roof racks. Just for surfboards and snowboards. I could get away with a 3/4 roof rack, I like the Sherpa Needle. Don’t plan on a roof top tent or kayaks, but if I did, the Sherpa Crestone would get the nod. As said before, the stock tires are doo doo, an all terrain of your choice maybe your first port of call. I just purchased a TRD ORP same as you’re looking at and saving up for some upgrades based on advice received in this forum. Good luck and enjoy!

For a rig in AK non garaged would an aluminum rack be preferred for corrosion resistance? This sounds like a more extreme use case than most of us.

Yeah your need for full or half rack would help. I have an ORP. It did not come with a pro-type rack, just rails, but did come with a sun roof. I went with the nFab half rack as to not cover the sun roof and it bolted to the existing frame of the oem rack (non-pro). And hello from CA.
