Got the new vehicle and pretty happy. However, the remote start using the key fob only has me scratching my head. My understanding is all of the TRD Pro Premium models had the remote start built in. However, unless its total error on my part nothing happens when I pressed the Key Fob lock button once, twice and then the 3rd time holding it down. I then tried to use the toyota ap that the dealer installed on my phone and don't see an option there either. All I see if things like miles on the vehicle and tire pressure on on 4 tires. Now, it was crazy hectic at the dealership on Friday so some things were not covered very completely by the sales guy. Anyway, appreciate any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.

    Beautiful truck and welcome!

The button procedure on the key appears to be different on the Toyota website than what you described above. Not sure about but have a look:

Thanks. Just tried it and nada. All it does is beep once after each press and that includes if I hold the lock button down for 3 seconds straight the third time. Very disappointed as everything I read in advance said the TRD Pro had a remote start key fob. Need it for the dogs in the vehicle if I want to run into a store for a few minutes and buy something. Can't leave them in the vehicle when its 99 degrees outside. Also wanted to start it an get the ac cranking before me and the dogs load up.

I'm not sure but on the side of your truck does it say TRD Off Road? If so, and according to my understanding of the Toyota website, the TRD Off Road does not have the option for the Remote Connect (which is needed for remote start via key fob). I'll leave a link below and a screenshot. However, if I misread your photo and you have a TRD Pro then you would normally have the Remote Connect option and it should work.

I think you nailed it. Its a TRD Off Road Premium. Given that, it appears I don't have the ability to start it using the APP and also the Key Fob itself won't remotely start the vehicle. Sort of a kick in a teeth for a vehicle that costs over 50K.

    I'm very sorry about that.

I did a quick search of the forum for aftermarket options and found the thread below. As an aside, I also found some posts about people not being happy with the factory remote start due to limited range and also the $10 monthly fee after the 1-year trial subscription runs out.

EDIT: @semprenissart pointed out that the $10 monthly fee is to use the remote start via the phone app, not from the key fob. The remote start via the key fob will work for free.

Almost same situation when I picked up my Off Road Premium. I did my research, was positive I had remote start. Dealer was busy (Friday). Couldn’t figure it out. Got home, researched-(this forum) only Limited and Pro (those with JBL audio) have remote a start/app. I order this that morning, had it next day:

Start-X Remote Starter Kit for 2020-2023 4Runner Push to Start || 3X Lock to Remote Start || Zero Wire Splicing! https://a.co/d/4HwHUpv

took less than 1/2 hour to install works with factory remote good range no problems.

I have all the mechanical skills of a one armed monkey with a shaved head. I'm hoping the install is super super easy.

PS. I also did all the research on line and saw many and I mean many video's circa last fall on the 2023 Off Road Premium's that had remote start capability with the key fob. I find the whole thing quite confusing. Double PS. I'm not sure what the value is at all on the Toyota App except that you can get notifications of recalls and can see what your tire pressures are. They said I could schedule service with it, but it says on my app that my dealer requires a phone call to schedule service.

You’ve got to drop glove box and a few
Trim pieces around. That is hardest part.

you remove one factory plug, insert into module, plug module into truck mount(couple of readily avail spots), couple button pushes to program, put it all back together.

I believe instructions are very good

if you were in SE Massachusetts, I’d help you do it

Welcome. And i agree value has gone down across the board (all manufacturers). 50+K$ is still a lot of money to most people and an expectation for that. I get it. Like houses in a certain price range you expect certain finishes.

Unfortunately you're just not going to get that in the 4R. It's toyotas workhorse. The redesign will probably have more standard creature comforts. Until then your option is aftermarket remote start.

Agree 100 percent. I have a 2018 Mazda CX5 Grand Touring that is light years ahead of the 4Runner. It however can do almost nothing off road. I'd love to have had the Heads Up Display in the 4Runner, but even the Limited doesn't have that available. That's a game changer as far as safety goes.

Agreed. We had a Venza LE and wanted to upgrade and was going to get the limited, but research proved it was the same price as the nx 350 f sport (at our local stealership)with all that. So we opted for the lexus. The HUD is pretty damn nifty in my opinion.

I think in 5 years it will be mandatory for safety reasons. You almost never need to look down and hence take your eyes off the road. Everything is right there where you are looking.

I had emailed Toyota about previously and they replied yesterday. You're right! A 50K vehicle and it doesn't have the most basic of functions. If I get one of those customer survey cards, I'll let them know my thoughts on the matter.

Just a precision in case anyone researches and sees this in the future.

the $10 monthly fee is to keep using the remote start through the app. however, the remote start via key fob will forever be available even without the subscription

Now I'm actually glad I don't have it! Having to pay for use of a remote start that you bought? It's a stupid line of thinking right there.

The monthly fee is to use the Toyota app which also gives you the ability to remote start via your phone. You can still use remote start without the app for free

Probably why my Toyota app is so barren then. I'm not paying for any of that crap. The only thing my app shows me is if there's any recalls and service appointments.

Yea I’m not using the Toyota app either. There’s nothing that I need from it personally. During the 1 free year I used it maybe twice

Thanks for clarifying the matter. Seems like a lot to use it through the app. Thanks again.

And also @Vaturkey , toyota puts in a"safety" feature on push button start models. The wine will shut off when you open the doors after remote start. Didn't matter factory or aftermarket. The physical Gkey stays on.

A remote start is definitely not the most basic of features, its relatively new to manufacturers adding them to stock stock vehicles.

Aftermarket is far superior and they also have monthly feature options if chosen. I love my Compustar T13 that has 3mi 2 way range with no subscription and won't shut off after opening the doors after remote start.

Every vehicle I've owned, since 2014, has had remote start, with the exception of my 2015 JKU and 2018 86. Those vehicles were a 2014 Cherokee, 2016 Colorado, 2017 Challanger RT, 2019 Scat, and a 2021 K5. I wouldn't call them relatively new.

It may be relatively new for Toyota, but not other MFGs.

Welcome. You’re not the first and not the last to be unsure on the remote start. This is just poor marketing/education from Toyota. Their brochure for 2022 and 2023 was really confusing and lacking. Also, the new breed of Covid salespeople are just really clueless order takers. The good news is that there are quite a few aftermarket options that are easy for the DIYer to install. If you’re in Utah, I’m happy to help.

Congrats on the ride and great color choice! I agree, it should be a standard feature on a 23 premium model.

I would still consider that relatively new since cars have been around for a very very long time. And in those vehicles you mention were probably options added, or included on premium models.

I had to add remote starts to all my relatively recent cars since they did not have remote starts included. 2004 Acura TL, 2014 Mazda 3 GT and 2019 TRD Premium 4Runner.
Though my 1979 Buick would sometimes still run when I turned it off. lol
