Has anyone towed their 4Runner a substantial distance? I am relocating and have to tow the 4Runner with a Uhaul vehicle carrier. Curious if anyone has done this before. I have never towed anything except a couple of 16' ski boats years ago. Any tips or advice?

I have never towed the 4Runner, but if I did, I'd probably use a tow dolly and disconnect the rear driveshaft at the pinion, then use a ratchet strap or two to tie it up to the frame.

Toyota doesn't want you to flat tow but some people have. I don't think I'd risk it but that's me.

I saw a couple trailer towing their Limited AWD with their vintage Greyhound bus.

That's not an option with Uhaul. Will be this kind of trailer.

    Hey Rocko,

I haven't towed either of my 4Runners, but I do tow my FJ40 Land Cruiser. On the U-Haul car trailer (or similar), it's a simple deal. Just drive up on it (the ramps are built into the trailer), fasten down your 4Runner with strong straps and go. We also have a 4x4 Suburban with the 5.3L 300hp motor and trailer towing package and it's no big deal. Just watch your speeds and make sure you get the trailer brakes hooked up for long downhills or quick stops.

    What is your tow vehicle?

You'll have no problems. Just make sure that if you don't use the U-Haul branded trailer that you do talk to them about the trailer you're pulling, they are (usually) great at helping getting everything rigged up.

Again, just make 100% certain your trailer brakes are in top shape.

    Good luck!

Ah, gotcha. Then as @Texoma-Brad said, just strap 'er down tight and go. In the early 2000s I had the exact same setup to haul my old college Camaro and what little belongings I had 400 miles from PA to VA. I was only 23 at the time and white knuckling due to lack of experience, but it did just fine. Just remember you'll be one of the slowest vehicles on the road, and always figure out your exit strategy before you park it anywhere ha ha

I've towed 4Runners and Land Rovers. You just go to UHaul, rent your big box truck and rent a trailer for a car. It will have four wheels and you drive the 4Runner up on the trailer, secure it and away you go. Easy peazy.

All four wheels of the 4Runner will be on the trailer.

I've towed mine a couple of times and to protect the parking pawl, I like to secure it while it's in neutral and then parking brake and then put it into park. Not sure how much it helps but it can't hurt.
