6th gen Speculation Thread

Looks like another clickbait article with more regurgitated speculation and rumors.

The current Lexus GX, 4runner and Land Cruiser Prado are ALL built on what is internally referred to as the Land Cruiser J150 platform. In other words, the 4Runner is a 150 series Land Cruiser and so is the Lexus GX and the LC Prado. The previous internal name was J120.

If Toyota has decided to refer to the next generation as the J250 series, that would certainly make sense.

Regardless, the 4Runner and the LC Prado are identical save sheetmetal and glass and the GX only differs from the Prado by the engine and transmission.

I was out driving my 2023 SR5 today and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Except for the stock sound system of the radio which probably needs better speakers.

 

Yes, I understand history, we are trying to uncover the future.

The good news is that the turbo 4 cylinder will have way more usable power than the outgoing V6.

I got curious about the LC250 dimensions as compared to the GX 550. The first thing I noted in the comparison below was that the greenhouse window angles and length are all the same, the wheelbase is the same, etc. So it's clear the underlying structural body cage is identical with only the exterior sheet metal skin being different between the GX 550 and LC250.

Therefore, we can assume the dimensions will be virtually identical with the GX 550:

Length: 197.04" w/ trailer hitch, 194.88" w/o trailer hitch
Width: 77.95" w/o mirrors, 83.22" w/ mirrors
Height: 76.18 in. (GX 550 Overtrail)
Wheelbase: 112.2"

I would say a more interesting question would be if the 4Runner will share the same dimensions as it has previously. If the idea behind the TNGA-F platform is that it is easier to adjust width and wheelbase, It seems like there is a good possibility the 4Runner could have a different footprint this time around.

 

Guesses perhaps, lazy articles with an overlay of the GX 550 on top of the LC250, but there was nothing definitive showing a scaled line by line comparison, let alone window angles (see red lines and degree markings on drawing). For those of us that like details, these are the kinds of things we look at.

The 4th gen Tacoma has the same dimensions as the 3rd gen so perhaps the 4Runner will do the same.

I meant whether the 4Runner would share dimensions with the GX/Prado. Or, go with a smaller footprint.

It seems like it's been pretty clear from the last few "teasers" that the GX and Prado were going to be the same basic thing.

 

I think it is likely the 4Runner will not stray too far from its existing 190" length. Some speculation has said it would move more towards earlier generation sizes, so perhaps it will even be closer to 185".

 

Exactly. Although the current 4Runner / Prado / GX are ALL J150 Land Cruisers, only the 4Runner has a unique body and glass. I wonder if Toyota will continue this trend or go the more economical route and bring the 4Runner into the fold of the Prado and GX or, as you suggest, might they create a new footprint for the 4Runner. I doubt it, but we'll see.

Time will tell.

 

I'd love to see a slightly smaller and more capable 4runner, maybe even a MT option. Not holding my breath, but I can dream.

 

As the LC250 will be similar to the GX550, the 6th gen 4Runner will be similar to the 4th gen Tacoma, moving back to its roots, while still being an evolutionary design. Yes, this deviates from the current gen 4Runner, GX and Prado being similar.

Expect the engine choices to most likely mirror their twins as well, so the 4Runner will get the Tacoma's 2.4L Turbo or 2.4L Turbo Hybrid, no TTV6, you will need to step up to the LC250 for that.

The first rendering below from Carbuzz was reviewed by an insider at Plano, they said it was not that far off with the exception of the front end, which would follow the Tacoma design. The second rendering below from Autoevolution gets the front end closer to the Tacoma, so take some combination of the two renderings and you have the new 4Runner.

Top one is ugly (well, they're both ugly). Looks like an FJC with a different front end. I sure hope the real thing looks better.

This is bunch of BS graphic designers imagining what the 4Runner might or might not look like. That's nice. Here's a rendering of a grapefruit.

We know what engines it may or may not have and what transmissions it may or may not have and we certainly know the platform.

Yawn.

Repeat more stuff from various websites. This is whetting our appetites. "The Tacoma's 2.4L Turbo." Oh wow this is breaking news. Better post it to the "Speculation Thread."

 

More of what we already know, but presented in an entertaining way...

 

There will be a "Private Event" at the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum in Salt Lake City from July 29th to August 2nd.

Since Toyota showed their FJ40 in the teaser photos it seems likely this will be the LC250 Reveal. It also lines up with several articles about the reveal being in August.

Absolutely right. It's goes like this: Toyota, fool me twice, shame on you....fool me thrice? Nah, I am going to get a Gen 5 before its too late!!!!

 

My Plano contact verified the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum "Private Event" is in fact the Land Cruiser 250 Reveal. Several journalists and aftermarket parts people have already taken early test drives. Since we know the Tacoma people worked with the aftermarket parts people for the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter, perhaps we have a LC250 Trailhunter to look forward to, hopefully we see more teasers soon.

The embargo period may be short, similar to the GX reveal in Austin, so hopefully we will see reviews and videos either during or soon after the July 29th to August 2nd event.

As far as the 6th gen 4Runner reveal, keep your eyes peeled for Q1 2024.

 

I really hope they get the front end right, and it does not look anything like 300 series. We already know the shape will be that of GX550, which to me is quite good.
