Just got a 2020 4R ORP and it seems weird. Read forums but it was from 2010 and FJ cruisers...

Getting a little vibration on the 4wd shift knob while on 2WD (H2) and it seems to move probably 2-3mm back when gassing the car. I can see it vibrate on normal drive as well. When I hold on to the lever, you can definitely feel it moving.

Is this normal? Never had a 4wd shift knob. Got that little switch on my 2017 tacoma OR :/

All of my manual shift tcases have vibrated. However the one in my 2020 ORP occasionally rattles until I nudge it.

Totally normal. That shifter is directly connected to the transfer case. When you step on the go pedal, the whole drivetrain will torque load. Remember, the engine and trans mounts are rubber. They give a little.

I store my little plastic container of gum next to that shifter. Every time I take off from a standing start, it sounds like I have a rattlesnake in my truck...

Dark Knight is correct. I noticed the same vibration and asked the Toyota mechanic. He explained the same way.

My previous 4x4 were Tahoe and Grand Cherokee and had different linkages so it worried me too.

Lol. Y’all should see the shifter movement when I put the truck in 4.7low and give it some foot. The shifters are like a baseball player swinging for the fence.

No way. The first time that you need 4x4 and you pull that lever, you’ll go “yeah, this is what is all about” .

Glad the knob on my SR5 doesn’t rattle, I’d have to tighten it up. ;)

Yet another thread where I experience lever envy. :D

I hate to admit it, though I don't think I am alone, but the real TC shift handle is a major reason I chose the Off Road model. After all the other 4wd vehicles I'd had previously, the dial in my 2013 Tacoma was always weird to me. I never had any issues with the dial, but prefer to feel the transfer case going into gear.

I would agree, I had the lever on my 97’ Tacoma and that would be my preference. Now I have the dial on my SR5 and while it works fine, I would have liked to have had the lever as it seems to engage 4wd a bit quicker.

I love the SR5 trim, only thing I would change is the transfer case.

I guess you never drove a manual transmission?

I don’t feel old, butI guess I must be getting there, as I still remember when automatics where an option that cost extra in a lot of cars. I also remember having to get out to manually lock front 4WD hubs.

I was gonna say something similar. The shifter in my Tacoma shakes and shimmies all the time.

My 22 OR 4x4shifter vibrates as well. I always wondered if that’s was normal. I can see the movement on the shifter would be ok when torque is applied but the vibration on the shifter? I believe even at idle it vibrates . I need to check it again.

It’s physically attached to the transfer case, which is bolted to the transmission, which in turn is bolted to the engine. Pop the hood and feel the engine cover when it’s idling ;)

(BTW please don’t go touch the hot valve covers and get burned!)

I like that it’s attached to the transfer case. It’s kinda cool, like a tractor.

Except that the rest of the vehicle rides like it’s on a cloud. It has to vibrates to remind you that you are in a bad-ass 4x4. The SR5 with the rotary knob won’t remind you because it’s electronic, but it’s still bad-ass.

The dial is 10x better if you ask me.

My Tundra is the dial. I'm not in it for the "coolness" factor.

I’ve had both, and there are pros and cons to each. From reading many posts, it seems that first time 4x4 owners struggle wrapping their heads around the lever.

Its 10x faster. Doesn't vibrate like mad.

I swear half the time I tried to put the 4R in 4WD I couldn't tell unless I looked at the dash. Now I turn the dial and go.

I started getting an annoying buzz/rattle sound from mine yesterday. The only way I could stop it was by putting my hand on it. Anybody had this issue and found a solution (besides leaving my hand on it)?

Is the knob loose or anything sitting in the boot? My lightning cable will rattle when it's sitting against it.

Or is this the rattling console issue that someone fixed recently?

How is it 10x faster than instant? You pull the lever and it's on. Sometimes the front differential actuator takes a second. But, the rotary dial relies on 2 actuators, so you have just as much potential for delay.

I said nothing about the actuator being faster/slow.

The lever never felt like it went where it was supposed to even giving it a little extra when switching.

Also for whatever reason when switching to 4WD from a stop. The 4R I had to move a little in order to get it to get into 4WD. Could feel it kick in and the dash indicator turns solid.

Tundra I don't need to move and it switches no problem.

    Not a big deal

The downside to the lever is the awful bumpers that come with it. I find it humorous when the dial vs. lever discussions come up yet we are all stuck with just two pedals.

    Bumpers?

As a 6 speed manual owner, manuals are highly overrated.
