Had small chip/tiny cracks in windshield and Safelite came to repair it through my insurance provider. It was pouring rain, he was in and out in 20 minutes annd told my wife (I wasn’t home) that the repair went well annd there will be some discoloration.

I come home and my rear passenger side window open. I think he somehow opened it by mistake. It also looks like he didn’t do anything. It looks exactly like it did when I left this morning. Some quick googling makes it appear as though the resin won’t cure correctly if moisture is applied to it.

The tech claims he did the repair and didn’t leave the window open. But the woman on the phone said it sounded suspect so she “escalated” it to the district manger.

What say you? This is what is looks like after the “repair”.

Hard to tell from your photo. But I’ve had chips/small cracks repaired and sometimes you still see the cracks after repair. It is what it is. Cracks probably won’t spread. But you may be left with visible crack lines.

Your “chip” looks pretty gnarly and I wouldn’t expect that one to disappear after repair.

I had a similar chip like that in a windshield. A guy approached me at a gas station and offered to fix it right there. He said I didn’t have to pay if I wasn’t satisfied, so I figured why not. He pulled what he needed out of his trunk and made the repair. The result wasn’t optically perfect, but it didn’t look like a crack had been there. I was satisfied and paid him. OP’s crack looks like it hasn’t been repaired.

Safelite is pretty good if you get the right technician. The crack doesn't look like it has been repaired. You will still see some discoloration where the resin fills in, but the crack usually just looks like a hazy white/yellow spot. A good way to test is to run your fingernail across the chip. You should feel the edge of the resin, but not the chip or crack. As for the moisture, they should use a vacuum seal tool and UV light to make sure that the resin cures.

I did a windshield repair once that looked like they put a drop of crazy glue in it after I gave the 40 dollars and signed a waiver that the repair might suck and not help. It was a small chip with a crack about a mm long. Looked the same after the repair.

Just an outside question on this question: is price ranges (ballpark figures) on a new windshield for 21 with all the safety sense stuff? Mine is going to need to be replaced.

Still haven’t heard back from any managers, creeping on 48 hours now. What kind of world is this where it take two full business days to hear back from somebody?

I have done a filler job on my Rav4 via Safelite and this pic does not look like its repaired. When my glass is repaired it looked very smooth. However when the sun hits the glass I get glare from the chip. IMO I don't say they did a bad job on their filler job or glass replacement. But could be because I went to their shop in person, not using a mobile service. I only say Safelite glass (the name was starting with "F" don't remember the exact name.) is very poor quality compared to the original Toyota glass. Original Toyota glass was very tough against small chips you get with day to day driving vs Safelite glass leaves a mark / dot on tiniest chip you hit. If I have to do it again I'm gonna try to get a original Toyota glass as with my experience Safelite glass is pathetic. Sorry I went little far from the glass filler job on this post.

Had a chip similar to this (on a Jetta admittedly) repaired by a local glass shop. You could still see a speck of a chip but nothing like your picture.

Side note, I don't trust Safelite and take my vehicles to the local glass shop for everything. Case in point my dad needed a new windshield in his F-350, had Safelite do it and they left all sorts of glue from the stickers on the windshield. Didn't even fully come off after taking a razor blade to it. I had mine replaced at the local glass shop and it looks perfect. They even cut out the inspection stickers from my old windshield (still attached to the glass) and now I'm conducting an experiment on if I can make it until December with no inspection stickers and not being pulled over by the police. So far I've made it 2 months :)

Seems like this one is more of a crush than a chip. I mean, that glass is mangled. I still maintain that some windshield “injuries” are just too bad to bring back to life. Preventing spread is a win in itself sometimes.

Safelite another monopoly brought to you with Chinese garbage products. Sadly my local shop was bought out by them.

You shouldn't see the crack at all. Just replace the windshield, insurance should cover 100%.

I’m going to shoot you a PM and I’ll send you the number of the guy I have used in the past that is cheaper than all other shops. He does work in the Memphis area and N MS. He does good work.
