37k Miles Trans Slipping

NEED HELP. Just did an oil change on my 4Runner. It had 37k miles and I have done the last 3. Drove it for 1 day no issues. Next day trans starts slipping in gears 1-2. I then checked dipstick and oil was a little bit high ( I put 5 quarts in then 3 pints). I re did the oil change and it currently has just over 6 quarts in it. Still slipping very badly and am unsure on what to do.

 

Post a pic of the drainplug where you took the engine oil out.

 

If you didn’t drain the trans take it in, a ‘21 should still be covered by warranty.

Yes I did. I fucked up so badly. I have aftermarket skid plates and I used the incorrect hole and drained the trans fluid. Is there anyway it will be fine if I put fluid in the trans and change the oil again?

 

at this point you might as well throw trans fluid in there and see how it does.

so did you actually drain the motor oil in all this? i’d leave it be if you did and the engine is properly filled.

 

Drain the oil and start over. Any idea how much Trans fluid you drained? If so replace the same amount

 

The transmission is probably screwed. There is a chance the engine might be also screwed.

 

Damn thats a really bad mistake. If you didn’t really drive it too much you might be okay but damn. You were probably 3 quarts low on transmission fluid and overfilled on engine oil. I think when you drain and fill a transmission only 3 quarts comes out at a time. Dont drive or turn it on anymore until you are correct and both trans and oil fluid. Dont take it to Toyota, they are gonna deny your warranty. Just research on how to do it yourself correctly or take it to a shop.

 

Fill the transmission to the proper level. You’ll have to do some research on how to properly set the level using the standpipe, because the transmission doesn’t have a dipstick.

Also, before starting the engine again, make sure to check the engine oil level as well. It’s not completely clear in your post, but you might be ok on the engine if you actually drained the engine oil on your second attempt.

Forward is the only way. Things might turn out ok once you get trans and engine levels set.

What a nightmare...So so sorry for your mistake. I will pray that all works fine after your re-do.

 

the other day i tried my oil extractor that i used to use on my audis and unfortunately was only able to extract a little over 5 quarts. seems there is at least another quart that is stored in the oil filter housing. and since you are still going to have to go under and replace the filter you may as well just drain the oil from the pan. with audis the oil filter cartridge is on top of the motor making it more sensible to just use the extractor.

 

I bet it will be fine if you correct your fluid levels. You've got nothing to lose by trying. My sister in law is a first owner of a 3rd gen 4Runner. Around 2012-ish and 190,000 miles or so, her significant other at the time made the same mistake. She drove it a day or two before the transmission stopped working, luckily in her driveway. My father in law went over, looked at it and immediately recognized the problem. He fixed the fluid levels and the transmission worked like normal again. That poor 4Runner is now at 330,000 hard miles on its original powertrain and still in everyday use.

 

I got 3.6 quarts out of mine but I got about 4 back in after I started and ran through gears. It is or isn't try it
