Can I disable ABS for sand dunes?

2014 SR5, I'm up at the Silver Lake sand dunes for the week. I need to disable the overly aggressive ABS system. If I don't make it up a dune, ABS immediately kicks in and prevents me from stopping as I start to roll backward. This has already created a couple of dangerous situations where I have been unable to control my vehicle's speed while moving down a hill in reverse.

There are two fuses for the ABS system, and they are combined with a fuse for the secondary air injection pump (see pics). I was wondering if it would be possible to replace this combined fuse with 3 individual ones, allowing me to pull ABS but keep the air injection fuse. Or, what would happen if I disconnect one of the ABS sensors? I also need to make sure traction control and vehicle stability control (VSC) stays off as well. Pulling the ABS fuses seemed to disable the traction control off button on the ceiling. Would pulling ABS fuses inherently disable all traction control systems as well?

I did see a kit from Dr. KDSS that would disable ABS, however this is sold out and I am looking for a solution that I can implement while I am up here this week.

 

As long as you create a fault in the system, it'll be disabled. ie: Unplug a wheel speed sensor.

 

I believe it is automatically disabled in low side 4x4. It is on my 3rd gen.

 

You can push your Trac off button once, the dash will illuminate "Trac off", then push and hold that same button for 3-5 seconds, then you will see the dash illuminate with the "Trac off" and the car w the squiggly lines icon will say "off". It will stay in this mode until you shut the ignition off. Then repeat the process when needed.

 

pushing the trac off turns off traction control.

holding trac off for 3-5 seconds (not necessary to push it beforehand) turns off traction control, vsc and trailer sway control.
I don’t know if it also turns off ABS? Have you tested it? It’s nice if it does!

 

I can't confirm that, but it sure has been helpful in thick sand at moderate speeds, when normally the traction nanny is kicking in. The PO of my 4th gen installed a kill switch for the ABS. I leave it off all the time now. I know there is write up on it, I wonder if there is one for the 5th gen.

 

Yes, completely turning off traction control and anything else that kills power when it senses wheel slip is critical in deep snow, mud, sand ,etc…

Having a button to shut off the ABS (mod or already installed from Toyota) is great in certain situations. Short of removing the fuse I don’t know if it’s possible without adding a kill switch mod

 

i’ve been out with some who unplugging at the abs unit.

 

It doesn't even turn off traction control. It just gives you less traction control. This is my biggest disappointment in the 4runner.

So I doubt it turns off ABS.

 

I'd say hold the traction control button to do that level of disabling, get up to speed, make sure nobody else is around, and slam on the brakes. If it feels like ABS is off then you're good. ABS, traction control, etc. They're all controlled by the same system.

Yea, pretty sure the braking aspect of ABS is unaffected. But it allows the wheels to spin with out traction control kicking in.

Being a Florida man (another term for redneck), doing fishtails and donuts is a right of passage. With traction control engaged, it's impossible to do either. With the Trac off, I can toss the back end of this thing all over the place. Turning the Trac off might help OP get through the week in the dunes. Maybe my 2012 is set up a little different than the newer models?

 

You can disable abs, trac , and tss by disconnecting one of the 4 wheel speed sensors.

 

Just FYI, my ORP I use cactus, mud mode in 4Hi in the snow, it’s the only mode you can use in 4hi. You can take off from a stop pretty quick in the deep snow, and it doesn’t cut the throttle.
