You must've missed the copious amount of lube involved. I'm talking Exxon-Valdeez Nuts levels of lube.

It doesn't factor it in any more than a normal engine failing after the same amount of time, which can also easily happen. However, under normal circumstances these batteries can easily last many years. EVs also have fewer moving parts and fewer things than can theoretically go wrong. And, as I said before, technology will continue to evolve.

But for the record, I'm with you on the government mandate. But (I could be mistaken on this), I don't believe there was any federal mandates on this. Just ones at state levels. The rest has come from car companies deciding that's what they're going to do.

Maybe. There's a lot less that can go wrong and, in some cases, I'd feel more comfortable buying that than the same thing in internal combustion. Most people's fears regarding EV technology comes right from what they know about ICE vehicles, the infrastructure established over 100 years, and lack of understanding of how the EV world (including their own day to day lives) would work.

I'm also not planning to buy an EV any time soon. No different than not buying a 1st model year of any new vehicle: a lot of fine tuning needs to be done for me to feel comfortable. However, if you actually look into the EV world (YouTube is a great way to do so), you'll see the technology is already much better than most people that don't bother to look into them are willing to admit.

I did see that Tesla claims a 500K lifespan. If that ends up being the norm, I'll be pretty impressed!

My thought was that it could offset some of the claimed emission savings, since the batteries are such a big part of their emissions production. Obviously, if they actually last 500K miles, that would be a moot point.

Hopefully battery technology keeps improving. Ideally, I'd like to see EV's gain popularity on their own merit, rather than government intervention. At this point, I still have no use for one. But, I could see it being a nice second vehicle, eventually. Or, even a primary vehicle for that matter.

Li-ion tech gets a bad reputation but that's simply the best technology we currently have. Lots of other technology is in the works, such as solid state batteries and more. Manufacturers would absolutely love to reduce battery size, increase range, and safety.

Infrastructure will continue to be built and evolve. My bigger concern is rust, especially where I live. But time will tell.

Thats impressive, I didnt know they claimed 500K miles.
It seems flimsy so I'd start worrying about interior, doors etc.at that mileage. Or really anything above 100K.

One aspect overlooked is insurance premiums.
    https://www.motorbiscuit.com/minor-ev-battery-damage-in-accident-insurance-company-total-car/
EVs that incur the slightest battery pack damage in an accident are almost instantly totaled, thus the high premiums.

    https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/insurance/tesla-insurance
“Teslas are made with expensive parts, contributing to their base cost. For starters, replacing a Model 3 battery module could cost nearly $20,000. Tesla repair costs are also higher due to the cars’ aluminum bodies, which are much more expensive than those made with traditional materials. If you damage a plastic or steel part on your 2012 sedan, an auto body shop can fix it for relatively little cost. The same isn’t true of aluminum. And if you do get in an accident, you’ll have to take your car to a Tesla service center or Tesla-approved collision center.
All of those potential repair costs come back to owners in the form of higher Tesla car insurance prices.
Tesla car insurance for a Model 3 costs a median of $2,574 per year, or about $215 a month, our analysis shows. That’s nearly 45% higher than the national median cost of car insurance.“

comparing it against national median cost of car seems nonsensical to me.
I would be curious to know what the cost premium is over same price ICE vehicle. I doubt there is any difference.
I completely agree with your point about having to fix it through tesla. every OEM is moving towards not letting customers or independent mechanics work on the vehicle. No excuse but them increasing their bottom line, in service revenue.

I hate that when most folks think EV, they think Tesla. I understand Tesla is the big one at the moment, but others have a horse in this race as well.

I think the major issue is the liability and cost of a damaged battery pack. Insurance companies do not want to gamble on insuring a car/battery that could pose a hazard with even with just a cosmetic amount of damage to the pack, not worth taking a chance on them unless they jack the premiums or just avoiding it altogether by totaling the car.
Note: I have absolutely nothing against Tesla, I think it’s wonderful that an American manufacturer is successful and taking the lead in this field…..
For myself, at this time a EV is not for me. I think batteries need further advancement, they are waaaaaay too heavy and take too long to charge.

Or cell phones how you used to have to carry them in a giant purse thing initially, they were huge with giant batteries that didn't last long.

Or drones. Drones can only exist because batteries got compact, light and could discharge at a high enough rate to allow a small helicopter to fly. That's pretty recent. And it's only getting better.

If you sold right now you would have made 34%. Not bad for 1 week.

I'll check back in at a later date.

Edit: in case you're thinking about it I would not buy today. Market blipped up a lot today. Should go back down for a better time to buy.
