I read the million pages on this and wanted to get a confirmation from my big brothers on this one. I wash inside the frames with a hose, pressure wash the underside... is a week long enough to let it dry out? Its 70's here in Sunny NYC.

Then I just need to hit the spots with rust I see with the ol'

Then spray it down with the

Is this enough before I Fluid Film everything in sight? Any product tips on correction on my method are much appreciated.

Anyone know a good 360 extension nozzle wand thing thats good? All the ones on Amazon have a bad rating.

No. Any extension wand that I have tried leaks between the bottle and the push button. Sure you get some product through the extension wand but end up wasting most as it leaks out. The is not acceptable when aerosol cans of Wool Wax and Fluid Film are over $10 each and a single extension wand is pricey as well.

If you have a small pancake (6 gallon) compressor do your self a favor and purchase a kit from Wool Wax. I have been using one for quite some time on my 4Runner and Tacoma. Makes the job much easier.

Concerning your other question, depending on the severity of the rust on your frame a quick wire brush to remove anything loose will work. The Rust-Oleum product should be fine. When I did my 4Runner 4 years ago, I applied some POR15 to the some frame welds, let it dry and then Fluid Filmed. I have since switched to Wool Wax and my frame still looks great after 4 winters in the Northeast.

Awesome post. Thank you. I was considering buying a compressor but wasn't sure what to go with. It would be a new thing to me.

I like how that POR15 sounds from reading about it on Amazon after reading your post. Do you just slather it on with a paint brush? You used the red can?

Underside still looks great but I fear that suddenly rust is going to sneak up on me and trying to just stay ahead of it.

Thanks again for your great post.

When I purchased the 4Runner, I applied a coat to the frame welds, let it dry and then applied Fluid Film for the first three years. I am currently using Wool Wax as of last fall. It has lasted longer then Fluid Film.

I used the red can of POR15. I did not use any of the metal prep they sell.

I get my whole under carriage coated in Fluid Film every year in early October. I pay a shop $100 to do this. It is worth every penny to me considering Pennsylvania salts the shit out of the roads. Not to mention the brine they put down before the dusting of snow arrives.

    $100 is a steal. In Northern NJ/NYC its $400.

Thanks for that link, post content, and that spray stuff! I am going to read up even more now. I have never even heard of that spray.

I would think that a week would be plenty for it to dry unless it's really humid. Anytime I've down rust mitigation I just get anything loose off with a needle scaler or wire brush and then hit it with the fluid film. Been doing that for years without any issues.

I week is a long time. Wash frame, drive on freeway for 15 minutes, good to coat in a day or 2 max. I wouldn't over think it.

When you guys apply Fluid Film or Wool Wax, do avoid spraying near the back of the hubs to prevent getting any on the brake rotors? Seems like you would really want to coat near the wheels and suspension components for road spray but that puts you near the brake rotors? Or can you control the spray well enough to keep off the rotors? I understand the rotors are consumable compared to the frame. Just wondering if any immediate or long term braking issues?
