Subject line kind of says it all. The question is, why?

I just rebuilt the engine. Prior to that, stock 22RE that failed compression tests. Could a weak engine be the cause for alternators and starters failing prematurely?

What could be other causes? Also, even with a brand new starter, it still takes more turns than I'd expect with a new engine. What am I missing here?

By more turns how long do you have to hold it til it starts.

I can imagine having long start times causes more wear on the starter but I wouldn't think twice in one year. Unless you have to hold it and the starter is getting hot as hell.

I don't think your engine is the issue. IMO, all of the wiring in your engine bay was absolutely disturbed and the wiring is likely the problem. Could be ground issues, intermittent wiring runs from loose connections or wires that got streched too far and now have broken strands.

Good luck troubleshooting this......it could be tricky to locate the source.

I'm guessing that 'new' means refurbished, not new OEM. Those probably aren't available anymore. Refurbished on something that old is a flip-a-coin process. But you could look at the brushes on the alternator to make sure those are good.
