I meant to post this in 5th Gen forum but don’t know how to delete it. Sorry.

The button on overhead console can be depressed in 2WD. The dash display says Trac-off. This implies there is some traction control using ABS, even in 2WD. I assume this works in 4Hi as well? When you shift to 4Lo the dash display also says Trac-off. At this point you can use Atrac or MTS for traction control. Has anyone experienced meaningful traction control in 2WD or 4Hi as evidenced by hearing the ABS engage? I believe there is also a flashing light when brakes are being modulated? Also, depressing the traction control button for 3 seconds turns off both traction control and VSC. When would this be useful?

There’s 2 types of traction control. Engine traction control (Trac), and brake traction control (ATRAC).

Engine traction control reduces engine power whenever there’s wheel slippage. This along with vehicle stability control make sure vehicle handles properly in high speed on road.

Engine traction control is automatically turned off (Trac off, VSC off) in 4Lo, as you can imagine you wouldn’t wanna loose power when you’re wading slowly through mud and one of your wheel slips.

Engine traction control is not automatically turned off in 4Hi, because you can cruise in high speed in 4Hi and it comes handy in controlling the car. But there might be cases when you want engine traction control off, for example there’s thick snow and you’re cruising in 4Hi, you see empty parking lot and can’t resist the urge to do some donuts. You gun your engine and turn the wheels to throw off your rear. Trac detects wheel slippage and cuts off engine power, now you’re stuck at half donut. Press that button for 3 sec and turn off engine traction control. Full send it.
