Bug Deflector

Have 2010 4Runner and hood looks like it was shot with a shot gun. Getting ready to repair and wanted thoughts on BEST bug deflector.

I have this one. I put it on after a rock hit my hood and put a nice little dent and paint chip right on the edge.
This covered it up and doesn’t look bad.

Might want to also get some get some input about rock chips on the windshield after a hood deflector is installed. Apparently there are some here who have reported that it increases those chips while reducing the hood chips. Pick your poison I guess...

 

Anyone else notice increase in windshield chips after installing a bug deflector?? I have a deflector and my windshield is peppered with chips. But I never made the connection.

 

The AVS Bug Deflector II is a great design. Low profile but sits up off the hood. No contact with paint.

 

With damage that bad, I might consider using a rust neutralizer and then vinyl wrapping the leading edge of the hood. Just past the chips. And then install a AVS deflector.

 

2nd the AVS big II. After going thru 3 windshields in 18 months, I wanted something, even if its just a placebo. Looks good, easy install. Been 6 months and so far, so good.

 

The AVS are oddly hard to get, though. I bought one on Amazon a month ago and it vanished in shipping. I got a refund and reordered June 3. It still hasn't shipped. The AVS website says to allow up to 45 business days for delivery. That's nine weeks. Amazon is more optimistic (3 weeks if you order now), although I don't know why.

 

If you get the hood repainted I’d suggest Xpel PPF. Probably have to wait 39 days or so though I’d guess after a re paint

 

Money well spent on Xpel PPF. Forget the bug deflector and get some protection on it.

 

When you install the AVS 2 hood protector does it contact the paint on the member directly below it when you close it? I don’t know what you call that piece but it is body colored and runs above the grill and between the headlights.

 

Ironic! I recently bought a 11 SR5 and the hood was in pretty bad shape. Had no option but to get the hood repainted. Expensive but it's the front of the car and all I could see were the million small rock chips.
I went ahead and got the entire front end buffed to match the newly painted hood to have some semblance of color match.

I ve been told to get a PPF done or front ceramic coating.

 

Get PPF done immediately otherwise you will be in the same situation. Ceramic coating really only protects against UV and not the vehicle itself from rocks or other debris. Make sure you do your research on PPF because there are several brands that are below average. I personally have Xpel due to the strict requirements this brand has when it comes to installers.

 

Right! I was looking at PPF too but some of the prices I have been quoted are a revelation.
I was not aware that there are categories of PPF. Will search around. How much do you reckon it would be to get PPF on the hood with your suggested film?

 

All installers are different when it comes to price. I recommend physcially going to look at the shop to see how clean it is and type of vehicles that are in there. Like I said in my earlier post any installer who sells Xpel should be top rated!! I have my entire front done along with the A pillers, mirrors, and door cups. Rocks are horrible here in AZ so I made the investment to protect my vehicle. I also did ceramic coating because the UV here well its self explanatory.

 

TX is no better when it comes to heat. We doing about 96 as I type this. The installer I went too had a few Teslas and Porsches sitting around. Has good reviews. This is again going to be an expensive exercise I concur.

Mine shipped today, so I'll report back hopefully later this week. People have posted mitigations for that problem with various manufacturers.

 

Any idea what the name of that grill piece is directly below the hood? My concern would be the paint gets rubbed off that piece with contact. I watched a Utube install of the WeatherTech deflector and that guy said he had contact initially, making the hood hard to close. Sounded like the remedy was to press and form the acrylic to the hood, while tightening the screws? Bottom line is the thickness of the deflector needs to fit in the gap between the hood and the grill piece directly below it (name of piece unknown).

 

Worked for me. It was Installed by the dealership before purchase. 15 Months now. No Issues. No Chips on the hood nor windshield.

 

My neighbor has this on his 19'. His views on it were , fits like a glove, is of very high quality and does not stop bug splatter.
I personally found it to be a little restrictive interms of visibility towards the edges of the hood but it was very well made, even the brackets .

 

For frame of reference I paid $1,200 for Xpel on my ORP. That covered the hood,grill, full front bumper and side mirrors.

The place I went to installed it on Ferraris, BMWs and other high end classic American muscle cars. I saw several completed in shop ahead of time. Their shop has a garage within a garage if you will that has a special ventilation system to suck up dust etal where the install is performed.

Also Xpel has a premade kit for the ORP 4R which minimizes the manual cutting and trimming.

There is a special wax they advised me to use on it I can post also if anyone has interest.

In addition to stone chip prevention I personally found that bugs wipe off so much more easy with the film as well.

I thought it was gimmicky at first but I am a believer now. These guys that do the installs are professionals and take a lot of time and care into what they do.

 

It does not on the exterior of the hood or top of the grill/ bumper/ lights. It bolts directly where the OEM one would go. It comes with inserts and hardware and a couple rubber nubs to keep the acrylic from touching the top portion of the hood.

As far as Amazon loosing stuff like that, I went thru 4Wheel Parts (same price as Amazon) so I had a store to return it to incase it was defective, broken or missing anything. This way I didnt have to worry about return shipping hassles.

 

I was bought in the NEW 2016 4runner ....I was the dealership of on the front exterior paint on the plastic shield on that paint ...$400 ....
I was the looking good amount of the paint ....

 

There are rubber bumpers that you can adjust. I think they’re above the headlights? You just turn them a couple times and they control the size of that gap you’re talking about when you close the hood. So if the deflector is touching the painted piece above the grille, you just adjust the bumpers to raise up the hood a little.

OP it’s not a + in my book, you may end up causing rock chips on your windshield instead. Maybe it’s worth it since it will save the hood and you can replace the windshield.

id agree with that. I have a hood deflector and 2 chips in the windshield

 

I think its a matter of whether you prefer chips on hood or windshield. former is easily replaceable. I can not comment on additional noise.

 

I've had a bug deflector (OEM Toyota) for 6-7 years now. I can honestly say that a bug deflector does not deflect bugs away from your windshield nor does it prevent rock chips. If anything it protects the front end of your hood.
