I want my new 4R to last 250,000 miles or more

what tips can our readers offer for breaking in a brand-new 2018 SR5 from the moment I drive it off the dealership lot? Especially engine and trans, etc. I am definitely going for the long haul on this one! I am mechanically capable, been doing my own oil changes and tire rotations for decades, let ‘er rip!

 

ill suggest fluids. change them when you are supposed to and only buy quality fluids. keep an eye on all the underparts of the vehicle also. fix the small naggy things as they come up. dont let em fester. thats all i got for now...

 

Probably don't wait until the first scheduled oil change at 10,000 miles. I suggest 500 miles (oil only), 1000 miles (oil and filter), and 5000 (oil and filter) after that.

Beyond that... shit, these things are unbreakable.

 

IIRC there's a break in period in the owner's manual.
All of this done during the first 1000 miles or so, don't quote me.

No hard braking
Not one constant speed for long periods of time
Keep RPMs under 4k.

Don't agree with changing the oil but not the filter, and yes 10k is too long for the first interval. I'd do 1k or 2k miles, then every 5k.

 

Everything they said plus; if you live in an area where they salt the roads in winter, Fluid Film the entire underside once a year. This will help hold off the rust.
We have an '07 FJ Cruiser we bought new. We're at 236,000 miles and the engine and entire drivetrain are still performing like new. If you take care of it there's no reason why yours can't last at least as long.

I plan on keeping mine for 30 years or more, so I did oil and filter at 2k miles, every 5k after. BTW, I spoke with a tech, even he thinks 10k is ridiculous on new vehicles and he works on them every day.
I’m going to change diff fluid at 5k, then transfer and tranny at 10k. Then normal maintence schedule.
Other than that, just keep an eye on everything, have fun, and wax at least every month,lol.
