Anyone notice how thin the paint is on newer Toyota?

I have a lunar rock and it seems like a rock chip happens every time I use it. I’ve heard of the issues with white Tacoma’s but man this is getting out of hand, dealer said they would get me a touch up paint but that’s it, I have PPF on the front half of the runner but still

I got this on the driver door today, just going to kohl’s to drop off an Amazon return, not even driving through construction or anything

That’s why I got super white. Harder to notice but I know it’s there.

Yep, get a bra for the front and some touch up paint.

I have never used on my Toyotas because it is a losing battle but have had good results with other vehicles.

Sorry to see this. Yeah as much as I dislike Ford quality I will say the paint I had on my Ford products was superior to any Japanese brand.

When I bought mine I drove very little prior to have Xpel put on the front end. I can’t imagine getting Xpel on entire vehicle though

Weird, I haven't got a chip on mine, and I know my KO2's are picking up stones. I hate the look of running boards, but I left them on for the stone protection, so maybe that's it?

Same here and on my 2017 Lexus. DR ColorChip is definitely a great option to fix it but you're going to be constantly touching it up. I used it on both my 4R and Lex and just quit trying to keep up.

Notice it all the time with Barcelona Red! I don’t understand why manufacturers don’t use a tinted primer for each color. Would at least make it not stand out so much. Do it all the time in aviation.

That's why I didn't go super white, the chips were black which are way worse. But maybe that changed for 2020+?

I wish there paint was better, but its not like I didn't get chips in my other cars.

I have a decent amount of paint chips on my front bumper and leading edge of the hood, but at least it's silver so they're not so noticeable. It's also 10 years old with 155k, so it's to be expected. I don't think I have any chips anywhere else, so the paint is held up well in that aspect.

I think it may scratch fairly easy, but luckily with silver you don't really notice too much.

Just got my 4R back from the detail shop two weeks ago. Had him fix a very slight scrape (my fault) on the lower plastic trim just in front of the right wheel well. He said it buffed right out and repaired perfect. Can't even tell it ever happened. When I went to pick up the 4R we were talking for a short while. He mentioned that he has fixed many hairline scratches and rock chips over the last 20 years. In his opinion, in the last decade or so, Toyota's paint seems to be on the thin side. I had him wax/buff out the whole 4R while it was there since it was due.

He also said: The only way to keep them perfect is to not drive them. LOL

Our midnight black 2022 4runner has lots of chips in the paint and only 25,000 miles on it.

Im pretty sure that their VOC regulations are pretty strict in Japan, similar to the US.

PPF, running boards/rock sliders, and a bottle of touch up paint will be your friend. Most people are not bothered by the rock chips and just enjoy driving their car.

As one of your mods have it fully wrapped then you won’t have to worry about chips or scratches. Cannot be more then I paid to have my C7 Z06 done.

Regular waxing does seem to help. (Can't hurt) In the past, every rock chip I received on the body or windshield came from driving on the Interstate, not off-road.

All of our chips are from driving on the interstate. Our 4Runner is not 4 wheel drive. My wife drives the 4Runner from New Mexico to California. The rest of the time we drive our 2013 Honda CRV that has 314,500 miles on it.

    Working on it
On my way to work last week I called the dealer to order touch up paint. The parts guy said he needed the VIN to see if he had any magnetic gray in stock… It was my 3rd attempt after hanging up twice due to long hold times.

Customer service is seriously lacking in the auto industry since covid... I bought the car from that dealer, it would have been easy for him to look up the VIN, but my real complaint is that I find it hard to believe he needs the VIN at all. I ordered it off Amazon instead.

I figure he didn't want to get blamed for selling you paint that didn't match. Even so, it's frustrating. It seems like everything I do now needs the VIN. There are too many digits.

Skip the dealer and crappy paint pens. Just go to your local auto paint store and have them mix up a small touch up bottle. It’s only $8-$10 and they can paint match older/ faded paint.

That is a logical observation I never thought of. The more aggressive tires even on pavement would be more likely to throw up small stones I would think

This is a modern paint thing. This is also why I had the entire hood, fenders, bumper, A pillars, roof line and headlights/foglights covered in PPF.

That is not a fair assessment of Toyota's paint quality. You can thank modern regulations for the degradation of paint quality. My father in law owns a body shop and can confirm most paint suck these days.

Before I sold my truck, I had some paint touch ups and scratches repaired. The paint correction tech was great and he said that Toyota/Lexus paint is soft so it can damage easily but because of this, it is easy to repair.

Toyota, while known for their quality and longevity, has always had shitty paint.

I have a white Tacoma and the paint is peeling in numerous places. Toyota had a warranty extension on other vehicles with the exact same paint for the exact same reason, however, the warranty extension did not include the Tacoma.

I had a black 4Runner. It was awful. First and last black vehicle I have ever and will ever own. I traded for a white 4Runner. I have paint protection film on the hood, grill, mirror backs, and door handle cups.

Regardless of how often you wax it, here in the south, the paint just does not hold up like some other manufacturers’ paint.

Despite their shitty paint, I will not buy anything else … That is unless I win the lottery and buy a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT 500.

Toyota paint has always been garbage, for as long as I can remember. I can't imagine their paint getting worse.

Every Toyota my family has owned growing up, all the way to my Tacoma and 4Runner now, garbage paint.

But factor in newer EPA regs, need for faster production lines, cost-cutting, etc. and you end up with even worse paint jobs on brand new vehicles.

I wonder how Lexus paint holds up compared to Toyota.

I am sad to hear this. I am still on stock tires but plan to upgrade shortly. I did not want to return to Duratrac's due to rock flinging. I was hoping a less aggressive AT would not present this issue. I wonder if wider fender flares such as Bushwacker's would repel this? I would rather re-paint fender flares than doors.
