Things I think about and ponder at 3 am.

what if next generation is not good, what would make a good substitute besides sticking with current or previous generations?

I can’t really think of a good substitute. Wrangler and Bronco are off-road capable but reliability and on road comfort are not as good. Other than those two not sure what else there is unless we get a Land Cruiser Prado or maybe Lexus GX

David from automotive press on YT has been saying we will get prado. That is literally every one of his videos are all about. I am unsure of his credibility but maybe prado comes here and they sunset 4R, or as you say its a dud?
Companies like toyota are super conservative and I think it will be a dud is *highly unlikely*. I am of the opinion that:

    1. 4Runner production moves to mexico. It will obviously have similar powertrain as new tacoma.
    2. prado *is not* introduced to US market. Introducing yet another SUV in the lineup will only cut into existing vehicle's market and it does not make sense to me.

If circumstances take me out of my 4Runner I’ll get a 3rd or 4th gen Ford Bronco or a K5 Blazer.

    Good question
I'm willing to bet 4Runner stays and we get the 6th, 4Runner's are EVERYWHERE, same with Tacoma's in my region, very good sellers. Cruisers, Prado, and GX are cool alternatives tho.

I feel like we can't know if the new Toyota's, especially the Runner, are duds because you gotta wait years to properly evaluate reliability performance as a whole.
How long does a Tesla last, compared to a Toyota classic V6, who the fuck knows lol
I know one thing, all my electronic and battery powered devices degrade and die quicker than I always would like. So hybrids and turbos and such kind of worry me. Pre - 2019 5th Gens do not worry me

There's always the 80 series. Probably the best vehicle Toyota will ever build, and nice ones are still half the cost of a new 4R.

An 80 with a LS swap is in my dream garage.

1st-4th Gen were successful without forums. The 6th Gen won’t be a dud. Only the internet will convince potential consumers that it will be.

I think this is the correct take.

For those that DON'T like it, a new 5th gen should last well into the 2040's.

Personally I'm not scared of the new drivetrain, just the price that I know will be prohibitively high.

I always figured I'd be a one and done 4R owner, so I'm not really even sad about that.

If I had to choose I'd go with a Wrangler though. I really like the Bronco, but it seems even worse than the Wrangler from a reliability standpoint. I imagine both vehicles are pretty comfortable for how capable they are.

I have a effed up back and had major back surgery on my lower spine. I had 0 issues with my Wrangler after I took off the stock MT tires and put AT tires on it. Everyone is different on how they handle such things, but just saying I didn't have an issue with it.

4Runner will be the “rugged” version and Prado/ land cruiser will be the “soccer mom” version of the same vehicle. The LC will also give Toyota an upscale real truck based mid size SUV to capture sales for the market that won’t pay a Lexus price. Think Avalon vs ES.

I'd just find a really mint 2nd gen with a 22re and a 5 speed, pay through the nose, and be happy forever and ever.

My 2020 has been great. I bought it new and take great care of it. I am not opposed to the new 6th gen coming out, but I would not buy one in it's first year of production. There are plenty of good used 4Rs, given that people have abandoned them in favor of better gas mileage. A year and half ago, a lady down the street from me unloaded her 4R for better gas mileage. Do what is right for you. Have a plan for what you want, are willing to spend and then do the work to find the one that is right for you and meets your needs.

When gas prices double there will be a lot of late model 4Runners for sale, mine will not be one of them.

You wouldn’t regret it. Many vehicles have come and gone in this household.
Goldie and my pre DEF diesel have always managed to miss being cut.
My 2nd gen 4R with the 1st gen driveline is the most versatile and reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

What year was that Wrangler? I had a 2012 2-door Sport that had plenty of power with the 3.6L V6, and it handled great on the highway. No complaints. I miss the maneuverability of that short wheelbase. If my 4R were gone, I'd consider a 2012 - 2017 2-door JK. Don't know about any of the JLs.
