I notice the Tacoma TRD Pro and Trailhunter are both using 18” wheels, and 265/70/18 tires to get to the magic 33” number, but I notice ground clearance is only 9.5”. So, I guess both of those trims have enough clearance to fit 285’s? I’m sure someone will find out.

I dunno, I probably don’t get it, but, my old JK Wrangler on 255/75/17 (32” tires) had 10” clearance at the diffs.

I kinda dig the Trailhunter. I haven’t done much with the 4R beyond tires and a roof rack. I like the idea that manufacturers are enabling buyers to add off road accessories to the truck and include in the car loan. Probably costs more than aftermarket, and I guess we’ll see about quality.

Interesting observation you saw, I took the CarBuzz 4Runner rendering and put it side by side with the Tacoma Trailhunter for design and style comparison. Looking at the current generation of course show differences so I would expect the same will hold true with the new 4Runner.

I think you're spot on here.

Carmaker1 has always maintained that the earliest we would see a 6th gen is in 2024 (production date). However, with so many other Toyota releases being delayed, could this could potentially push the 6th gen release back even further into 2025 production? It sounds like the new Land Cruiser has been pushed back to Spring 2024 now. Will Toyota release the 6th gen only 3 months after the Land Cruiser? I'm not sure.

A lot of similar design cues for sure.

I'm not a fan of most vloggers but Kirk Kreifels had a decent video showing the new Japanese automotive magazine BestCarWeb layout of the new Land Cruiser Prado. The interesting thing about rendering, according to Kirk, is they have the rear window up swoop, between the B & C pillars, the same as the new GX. He also makes other comparisons in the video to the GX. Kirk is suggesting the render is close but Toyota would change out the front end / grill body work, depending if it is the International Prado or US Land Cruiser. To me, overall the rendering looks a little out of proportion and amateurish, like many renderings, especially the bad front and rear overhangs.

At 3:30 he has a table of dimensions and weight published by BestCarWeb.upload_2023-5-28_6-28-43.jpg

    Good stuff!

I like Kirk's videos. His analysis is thoughtful and practical.

This is probably what the 4Runner will look like except a few detail trim pieces

Let’s hope they adapt that to a roll down rear window for the 4R

So here is one for speculation, I don't think I've read over the months any rumor of a 2 door 4Runner or Land Cruiser, did I miss it? Has anyone heard about 2 doors for the 6th gen 4Runner, the new Land Cruiser (US/Canada) or even for the international Prado?

If we were to get them, if they existed, and I say that with a capital IF, production still points to Tahara, Japan, if so, it means we would face a chicken tax on the two doors imported to the US and Canada.

So, here comes the speculation, could the rumors of Mexico production hold true, if we get 2 doors, meaning they avoid the chicken tax with Mexico production? (circular logic, I know).

It seems entirely possible that, if a 2 door option is introduced, it could be manufactured in Mexico. Especially since it will now share a platform with the Taco.

We are pretty excited about the unveiling of the new GX tomorrow. Might be another GX in our future.

It's hard to imagine Toyota/Lexus continuing to build the 4Runner and the GX in Japan for the North American market now that they both share the same platform as the Tacoma, the Tundra and the Sequoia. So we should begin to see them building these models in either the US or Mexico.

The TX is a replacement for the current RX and will not share the TNGA-F platform with the GX but rather the TNGA-K platform of the Grand Highlander. Paragraph below from Car & Driver.

At the end of the article linked below you'll see that the 1994 court decision allowed two-door SUVs to be taxed as passenger vehicles at the 2.5% rate. I've taken a screenshot of the last paragraphs for quick reference.

Do we know which lexus are made in US/Mexico vs Japan? In my mind that is a big step backward.

Yes, most of the info is available. All of the GX models are manufactured at the Tahara Plant in Japan on the same assembly line as the 4Runner and the Prado. All three share the same J150 platform. I believe that the RX is currently manufactured in Canada but I'm not certain. The J150 platform is only produced (as far as I know) at the Tahara Plant. But now with the TNGA-F platform being used in Indiana, Texas and Mexico, it would seem to make economic sense for Toyota to build the 4Runner and the GX in North America. But who knows, it's all speculation.

Thanks, yes I knew last GX and 4runners were made in tahara, just wasn't sure about others. I suspect LX is still from Japan.
100% agree it makes sense for them to consolidate. I am not sure if then the tahara will just cater asian markets? Its such a shame.

Welp, the gx has the new tundra engine. Chances are good we’ll see that in the new 4R.

    I doubt it; 4Runner didn't get the 4.6 v8.
My money is on the upspec hybrid from the Tacoma as the only engine (similar to the Tundra vs Sequoia relationship).

Will the new 4Runner still be "cousins" with the GX? I read the GX will continue being built in Japan. I like it a lot. Probably a bit more than I could talk myself into spending on a car, but if the new 4Runner is heading in this direction, they can have my money.

2-door SUVs are pretty much dead in North America. Even the 2-door Wrangler is just hanging on, accounting for some 18% of Wrangler sales. I don't know how well the 2-door Bronco is doing across the country. Locally I haven't seen a single 2-door Bronco since it launched.
